Family Healthcare Story Book

The family stories in this Family Healthcare Story Book reflect examples of

the realities faced by so many New Jersey families who have children with

special healthcare needs. As New Jersey's Family to Family Health

Information Center, a project of Family Voices-New Jersey at SPAN, we share

these stories with you so that together we can make a difference.

New Jersey Statewide Parent to Parent

New Jersey Parent to Parent, a collaboration between SPAN and the Family

Support Center of NJ, is a statewide network of parents supporting families

of children with developmental delays, disabilities, and special health

needs. If you are interested in becoming a " support parent " or you would

like to receive support yourself, please fill out the online form and one of

our P2P staff will contact you. For more information contact

parent2parent@... or call 1-800-FSC-NJ10 (1-800-372-6510).

2009 H1N1 Flu

Know the Difference between Cold and Flu Symptoms Click here to see the

difference between the symptoms of cold and the H1N1 Flu.

Remember to wash your hands with soap and water; use hand sanitizer if soap

is not available; use a tissue or your sleeve to cover your mouth or nose to

prevent the spread of germs if you are coughing or sneezing; get the H1N1

flu vaccine if you are in one of the priority groups; and stay home when you

are sick. Further information on the flu click here.

Education Commissioner Lucille E. Davy has announced the posting of the

Department of Education's new web page related to H1N1 influenza planning

and preparedness.

Centers for Disease Control New Parent Portal

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has a new resource available

for parents. The CDC has created a Parent Portal to help parents find

information to give children healthier, safer lives. The CDC Parent Portal

organizes and presents information for parents and provides resources from

across CDC, all in one location, making it easier for parents to find what

they are looking for.

Welcoming and Involving New Students and Families

The beginning of a new school year is a good time to look at how students

and families experience your school. How can teachers, support staff, and

administrators make the experience of returning to school more welcoming

and supportive. For more ideas and resources see: Welcoming and Involving

New Students and Families - Guidelines, strategies, and resource aids for

planning, implementing, and evolving programs to enhance activities for

welcoming and involving new students and families in schools.

Resources That Can Help Parents and Children

Substance Abuse & Mental Health Service Administration (SAMHSA) and the

Office of National Drug Control Policy (ONDCP) have tools that will help

your keep kids mentally healthy and drug free. Click here for available

resources.

Parent Training Modules on Promoting Children's Social and Emotional Skills

These modules provide information for families on how to promote children's

social and emotional skills, understand their problem behavior, and use

positive approaches to help them learn appropriate behavior. They are

designed to give parents general information on key strategies that may be

used with all children. Also available in Spanish.
