THE 9th ANNUAL

INFANT AND TODDLER TEACHER CONFERENCE

IS ON OCTOBER 29th, 2009 AT

The Westchester County Center

Scarsdale, N.Y.; October, 2009 †" Elkind, PhD. noted author of The

Hurried Child and The Power of Play will deliver the keynote at the Child Care

Council of Westchester’s Annual Infant and Toddler Teacher Conference to be

held on Thursday, October 29th, at the Westchester County Center, White Plains,

New York. Now in its ninth year, the full-day event

is a unique professional development opportunity for teachers working with

infants and toddlers in a variety of settings. The keynote presentation by Dr.

Elkind however, is open to all professionals and the general public.

Elkind, Ph. D. is Professor Emeritus at Tufts University. He is the author

of over a dozen books including The Hurried Child and most recently The Power of

Play: learning what comes naturally. He is past president of NAEYC and currently

the chief scientific advisor for JustAskBaby, an internet resource for parents.

During his keynote address, Dr. Elkind will explain how play is an important

mode of learning in young children in which they create their own learning

experiences. He will discuss how self initiated play builds social, emotional

and intellectual well being. The Child Care Council is delighted to bring

Dr. Elkind to Westchester at a time when many parents are concerned over how

best to support their children’s learning and development and child care

programs are trying to meet parents’ expectations. The Council’s Director

of Professional Development, La Bar is very excited to have Dr. Elkind

presenting on this important topic “as we call to action all those who care

for our youngest children to get back to the basics and create rich play

experiences which will lay the foundation for learning and future success.â€

The conference offers a variety of stimulating and interactive workshops

throughout the day featuring noted trainers and presenters: Joan Monk,

Childhood Faculty, Westchester Community College; Dr. Rubin, Holistic

Nutritionist; Zucker, Director, Virginia Marx Children’s Center; Tina

Pipala, M.S. CCC-SLP, CPSE Education Coordinator, A. School; Jodi

LaNatra, President, Musically Yours; Ken Kessel LCSW, Psychotherapist;

Towle, Ph. D., Westchester Institute for Human Development; and O’Neil,

President and Director of Training, Island Training & Consulting Group.

Workshops include: Play to Learn; Picky Eater Prevention; Playing with Mother

Goose; Museum Quality Artwork: How to enhance the value of children’s artwork

through process, product and presentation; Play- A Child’s Work- The

Connection to Language; Teach Music…Me?; What’s Happening in Play and How to

Use it to Help Children; Everyone is a Scientist!; Recognizing Autism Spectrum

Disorder in Very Young Children; and Purposeful Play and Prime Time Interactions

with Infants.
