4,3,2,1 Read Community Forum and Book Talk on Autism Set For September 28

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that an average of

1 in 110 children nationally have an Autism Spectrum Disorder. In New

Jersey the average is closer to 1 in 90, says Parles, leader of Counsel

to the Firm’s Special Education and Disabilities Law Group, and mother of a

20-year-old with autism.

“It’s a disorder that people are encountering more and more”, Parles said,

which is why she is thrilled that 4,3,2,1 Read, dale, Ho-Ho-Kus, Upper

Saddle River and Saddle River’s summer reading program, focused on educating

the community about autism this year. The program’s final event, a Community

Forum and Book Talk, is set for Tuesday, September 28 at 7:00 p.m. at

Northern Highlands Regional High School on 298 Hillside Avenue in dale.

The forum, sponsored by the dale Woman’s Club and Northern Highlands

High School will feature speakers on autism, including Parles, and a

book discussion on the summer’s two books The Curious Incident of the Dog in

the Night-Time by Mark Haddon and Animals in Translation by Temple Grandin.

The event is free to the public and although familiarity with one or both of

the books is encouraged, participants don’t have to have read either book to

attend.

Says Parles of the summer reading choices, “These books profile individuals

who are examples of persons with autism and strong skills, particularly in

communicating. We want to present (at the community forum) information

about others on the spectrum and how skills and symptoms can vary greatly”.

Autism is referred to as a “Spectrum Disorder” because not everyone with an

ASD (Autism Spectrum Disorder) faces the same challenges.

Superintendent of Schools Keenan agreed the topic was an important one,

saying, “The more we learn about students with Autism the better prepared we

will be to provide them with the necessary skills to function independently

in the community, improving their quality of life, and that of their

families.” He added that public schools are becoming expert in the area,

working to begin new programs and improve existing ones.

This year’s 4,3,2,1 Read! is the third annual summer reading initiative

sponsored by the dale Woman's Club and Northern Highlands Regional High

School. Previous hot topics were Child Soldiers of Africa and Afghanistan.
