Guest guest
Ayurveda is a very old form of medicine that is predominantly practiced in India. It is based on the 5 elements of universe. The medicines given in ayurvedic treatments are made of natural ingredients. Aurvedic treatments are noninvasive and non-toxic I am not an expert in ayurveda. I am just an ordinary/desperate mom who has a 7 yr old son with severe verbal apraxia and PDD. I recently started [from June 2009] the EFA's and EPA's for my son. He has made such good progress with it[we still have a long way to go]. I have not started giving the Nutirveda but would likely start during the holidays so as to monitor him. What got me attracted to this product[apart from Tanner and melanie's progress] was because it has some natural ingredients which i use extensively in my daily life - turmeric, cinnamon, cayenne pepper and some of the other ingredients like amalaki and guggul i have known from childhood. Anyone who has grown up with their grandparents around them would know about most of these ayurvedic ingredients. Most of them are used as home remedies too. For instance if my kids have cold I give them warm milk with a teaspoon of turmeric. Sometimes when I have sinus problems, I get fresh turmeric from an Indian grocery store crush it and apply it like a paste on the forehead to drain out the sinus. So now the question arises, if I use these ingredients on a daily basis why is my son not talking? Maybe the combination/percentage of each ingredient in this product is making the fish oil to be absorbed in high capacity by individual cells and flushes out unwanted substance from the stomach. As I said I am no expert but would like to give this a shot. I have learnt so much for you all Moms that the least i could do is to explain some of the ingredients to the best of my knowledge which most of the Indian families are aware and use them. =========== Guggul - Its a resin from the stem of a tree whose botanical name is commiphora mukul. This has been used in the Ayurvedic treatments for lowering cholestrol/triglycerites. It is also said to increase the lipid levels in the body. It has also been used for weight management. It is increases the overall energy, strength of the individual. The biggest surprise is - it promotes voice [ I just learnt it in the last few weeks!!!] ================ Turmeric [this is my favorite]- we use it daily as a flavor. No traditional Indian dishes are complete without the use of Turmeric. Its usage and benefits cannot be just said in one sentence. Turmeric is an antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, anti-allergic, antioxidant, antiseptic..... It is used for treating Anemia, diabetes, digestion, food poisoning, gallstones, indigestion, IBS, parasites, poor circulation, staph infections, and wounds. Turmeric reduces fevers, diarrhea, urinary disorders, cough, and lactation problems in general. It is used to treat external ulcers that respond to nothing else. The list goes on and on of the uses of turmeric. It became very prominent in the US when studies found that it helps to cure Alzheimers'. In Ayurvedic medicine it is used everywhere. Those who are doing or familiar with biomed treatments use Turmeric as Enhansa So speaking in biomed lingo - it is a chealator of lead and cadminum. Protects brain from inflamation caused by mercury. Above all its an antifungal!!! =============================== Amalaki: popularly known as Indian gooseberry It is widely consumed in most Indian homes inthe form of pickles[its brined like the cucumber], preserves and jams. Its a common tale in Indian homes that Amla is the " gold " among herbs!!! It has the highest content of Vitamin C supposedly 20 times more than an orange. It is a common practice in Indian homes to cook the fruits whole with sugar and saffron and give one or two to their child every morning. ============================= Haritaki is used to improve digestion. It also has antifungal and antibacterial properties. ================ Cinnamon is very common. It is a very good antioxidant. ===================== Hope this helps to learn about the unknown, Goodluck, sowmya
Guest guest
Sow thank you so much this is fascinating... and ahead of the times as when I started Tanner on this I wasn't aware of the Alzheimer's study which was just published this month! In just a quick search I read that they are also linking turmeric to a decrease in cancer too -and I was searching in reputable scholar sites. Below is the study I found. I also want to let you and everyone here know that 's blog is done and Robin should be posting it to this board today. Robin can't wait to share all that continues to surge in as their life today is completely different in so many regards than it was just about a week and a half ago prior to starting the ayurveda. I'm also glad that there are a number of professionals from this group that have contacted me that will be starting the Nutriiveda with themselves and their patients. Clearly this is something that needs to be studied- and when you read the following it's not so far fetched as I thought it was that there is a neurological link to how this is helping!!! Curr Alzheimer Res. 2009 Dec;6(6):564-71. Optimized turmeric extracts have potent anti-amyloidogenic effects. Shytle RD, Bickford PC, Rezai-zadeh K, Hou L, Zeng J, Tan J, Sanberg PR, Sanberg CD, Roschek B Jr, Fink RC, Alberte RS. Center for Excellence in Aging and Brain Repair, Department of Neurosurgery, University of South Florida College of Medicine, Tampa, FL 33612, USA. Inhibition of beta-amyloid (A beta) accumulation and A beta fibril (fA beta) formation from A beta are attractive therapeutic targets for the treatment of Alzheimer's disease (AD). While previous studies have shown anti-amyloidogenic effects of curcumin in vitro and in vivo, no studies have examined optimized turmeric extracts enriched in curcuminoids or turmerones. Three standardized turmeric extracts, HSS-838, HSS-848, and HSS-888, were prepared with different chemical profiles to investigate their potential therapeutic benefits for AD. These extracts were fingerprinted by DART TOF-MS to reveal the significant chemical complexity. In addition four curcuminoids (curcumin, tetrahydrocurcumin, demethoxycurcumin and bisdemethoxycurcumin) were also examined. We measured the effects of the extracts and curcuminoids, on the aggregation of A beta by using a thioflavin T cell-free assay and the secretion of A beta from human neuronal cells (SweAPP N2A cells) in vitro. All three extracts and the curcuminoids showed dose-dependent inhibition of fA beta aggregation from A beta(1-42) in the cell-free assay, with IC(50) values of <or= 5 microg/mL. However, only HSS-888, curcumin and demethoxycurcumin significantly decreased A beta secretion (approximately 20%) in SweAPP N2A cells. Interaction matrices were used to examine possible synergistic interactions between HS-888 and the other extracts and the individual curcuminoids on A beta aggregation. Only simple additive effects were observed for the A beta aggregation inhibition, supporting the notion that the known curcuminoids are not strong inhibitors of this activity. However, HSS-888 showed strong inhibition of A beta aggregation and secretion, thus indicating that there are novel bioactive molecules in this extract that might be important leads for future AD drug discovery efforts. PMID: 19715544 [PubMed - in process] http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/19715544 And... An extract found in the bright yellow curry spice turmeric can kill off cancer cells, scientists have shown. The chemical - curcumin - has long been thought to have healing powers and is already being tested as a treatment for arthritis and even dementia. Now tests by a team at the Cork Cancer Research Centre show it can destroy gullet cancer cells in the lab. Cancer experts said the findings in the British Journal of Cancer could help doctors find new treatments. Dr Sharon McKenna and her team found that curcumin started to kill cancer cells within 24 hours. 'Natural' remedy The cells also began to digest themselves, after the curcumin triggered lethal cell death signals. Dr McKenna said: " Scientists have known for a long time that natural compounds have the potential to treat faulty cells that have become cancerous and we suspected that curcumin might have therapeutic value. " Dr Lesley , director of cancer information at Cancer Research UK, said: " This is interesting research which opens up the possibility that natural chemicals found in turmeric could be developed into new treatments for oesophageal cancer. " Rates of oesophageal cancer have gone up by more than a half since the 70s and this is thought to be linked to rising rates of obesity, alcohol intake and reflux disease so finding ways to prevent this disease is important too. " Each year around 7,800 people are diagnosed with oesophageal cancer in the UK. It is the sixth most common cause of cancer death and accounts for around five percent of all UK cancer deaths. http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/health/8328377.stm So get healthy, feel better than ever...AND prevent and or treat diseases like Alzheimer's and cancer (!!)...no wonder it sounds too good to be true to most of you. Please check ayurveda/nutriiveda out because the more you dig -the more interesting you'll find this. And you'll also find out why some of the best medical and other doctors are behind this today. =====
