Dear Parent, The Family Studies Research Center at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine is conducting a genetic study of autism and related disorders (e.g. Asperger’s Syndrome, Pervasive Developmental Disorder). The major goal of the project is to identify a gene, or a set of genes, that underlie autism. Research suggests that certain types of disorders, such as autism have a strong genetic component. By studying families with cases of autism, researchers can identify genetic factors that may pass from one generation to the next and predispose some family members to a spectrum disorder. As researchers, we shar e the hope for many families affected by autism that future generations will not have to confront this debilitating disorder. It will take both researchers and families to realize this goal. Your participation will he lp scientists and doctors to better understand the causes of autism, so that more effective treatments, strategies for prevention, and possibly a cure can be developed. The study involves several interviews with the parent or caregiver about the child, an interactive observation with the child, intelligence testing, parent personality assessments, and a blood draw from all members of the family. At your convenience, a trained member of our research team will meet with you in your home. Daytime, evening and weekend appointments are available. Families will receive a research report of the diagnostic evaluations, used for research purposes only. Some participants may be eligible f or compensation. If interested please contact study coordinator Schulman by phone at (212) 659-5655 or by email at .Schulman@..., or study coordinator Anushree Doshi by phone at (212) 659-5654 or by email at Anushree.Doshi@.... We look forward to hearing from you.
