Guest guest
My son (4.5 y/o) started swim lessons last week. He's doing pretty well, but his problems are with coordination and breathing. I'm wondering if anyone else has this problem? He learned how to blow underwater (I put a bubble wand underwater and told him to put his lips under). But he usually keeps his head all the way back, and that makes him too upright to swim. He can't remember to keep his mouth closed while kicking/ paddling. I have to reach out and push it, but it will open again. He will put his face under if you remind him, but only for a second to blow bubbles because he was taught to, not to breathe as you should to swim. I think he's only breathing out of his mouth, not his nose, so I can see why this would be hard. Also, he can't kick/ paddle/ breathe at the same time, I guess it's too much motor planning? I know someone here has to have a kid who swims. Did you experience these issues? I know the breathing is the hardest part for him, and I honestly am not sure how he breathes throughout the day. I know up until last year, if you pinched his nose he'd gasp and choke - he didn't know how to mouth breathe. Now that he can, he can't nose breathe in the pool. Makes me wish he learned how to swim before he learned how to speak. lol. Thanks in advance for reading and answering!!
