Guest guest
Hi, quick question: I've heard that a side effect of the fish oils is loose stools. My question is how loose (sorry!), how quickly after starting the fish oils can it start, how long can it last and can anything (like probiotics) help? My 25 month old started 1 capsule of ProEFA not quite 2 weeks ago and woke up shall we say a bit under the weather this morning. It's probably just a bug, but I thought I'd explore all options just in case. Thanks!

Guest guest
Malabsorption of fats could cause loose stools or flatulence. How quickly it occurs depends on your GI transit time. If the oils were a problem, I'd suspect that the loose stools should have occurred close to the first couple of doses. If you suspect that your child is not absorbing fats, you could give him digestive enzyme, such as Digest Gold, that is high in lipase. > > Hi, quick question: I've heard that a side effect of the fish oils is loose stools. Guest guest
It can be normal to have mild loose stools for a few days when you first introduce any extra oil to any human body -especially a child. If more severe it totally sounds more like your child is under the weather rather than it having anything to do with the one capsule of ProEFA (which is about the same as the dosage of EFAs in infant formula) From when I first shared about fish oils (over ten years ago) I know of only one child -from Canada -that had very loose stools- and there were one or two cases (literally) when the parent said they started the fish oils and their child threw up the next day and wondered if it was the fish oils. Typically I'll ask a (logical) question like " does your child get loose stools if you feed them a tuna fish sandwich? " Only one parent gave us an update that it was a bug -the rest shall remain unknown. But put it this way -if there is a chance fish oils can create more severe loose stools it's very very very very rare -and unknown to medical science that I know of. Also while I do agree that there appears to be clearly a metabolic aspect to why the fish oils and the nutriiveda are working and appear to be supporting each other...I do believe some are making simple things more complex by just auto suggesting from your post your child needs digestive enzymes. Perhaps he does -but perhaps not...and I'm totally from the keep it simple if you can school of thought. Best way to know if something you consider a " good " or " bad " sign is from the fish oils (or now nutriiveda) is stop the new supplement. Wait a few weeks and observe...then start again and observe. In my opinion to take what you just wrote below and from that just go ahead and start adding new things -digestive enzymes or whatever.... -you'll have a child taking more and more of things that are perhaps not necessary. And who wants to do that? Can you provide an update ? Hope it's all OK now! =====
Guest guest
Hi , Thanks for replying! Since I've posted, both my husband and I have had instestinal bugs, so it's likely my son had it first. To be safe though, I did two things. I first stopped his milk as of Tuesday morning - in the past, we've aggravated recovery from diarrhea by returning him to his regular formula or milk too soon. I also stopped the NN as of Thursday morning (I skipped it Tuesday, but gave it to him Wednesday) because I was afraid it was aggravating the diarrhea. We slowly started him back on milk yesterday, and so far seems to be back to normal. I should note that he is usually very regular with firm, but not constipating, stools. I want to get him back on the NN, but am considering starting him on it slower, maybe half a capsule at first, just in case he is a bit sensitive to it. I do have a question about how and when to give it to him. I thought I had read a recommendation to give it to kids earlier in the day rather than at dinner time because it can make them more active. My son's in daycare, and they feed him breakfast, lunch and afternoon snack. I was giving it to him in a little yogurt (about a tablespoon) in the morning just before leaving for work/daycare. He should be getting breakfast 30-45 minutes later. Is this OK, or should he be getting this with more food, and if so, is it really an issue to give it at dinner? Thanks again, - > > It can be normal to have mild loose stools for a few days when you first introduce any extra oil to any human body -especially a child.
