Guest guest
Roughly 40% of ASD--kids do have speech motor planning problems--but it goes undiagnosed because everyone considers it part of the ASD--and ignores it--the focus becomes social relations and whatever the most obvious ASD symptoms are for that child--speech becomes just part of the package and this is not correct nor fair to the child--just like what ever OT diagnosis is made--it should be identified as such and treated accordingly taking into account of course the other ASD--traits--but not overlooking the particular OT/speech problems you're trying to address. Otherwise no progress is made. Plus a lot of speech/apraxic kids are early on misdiagnosed as ASD/PDDNOS--before they can say anything and show they are not. Mine almost was though she was NEVER ASD--but doctors jump to conclusions when there is lack of speech and figure it can't hurt--they'll get more services. Well it actually can. A child who is not ASD--and high functioning otherwise--does NOT do well with ABA--no matter what behavioral issues there are--those have to be addressed differently--and anything the ASD continuum ---brings about standard ASD treatments which may or may not apply to your child--usually not. ASD--or not---get an appropriate diagnosis for his speech condition and treat that for what it is. If you just have the ASD--diagnosis it is much harder to get insurance to cover the frequent 1:1 PROMPT/motor planning speech therapy these kids need. I am very interested in this question. My son who will be 3 in December is 'suspected' to have Autism. His SPL is treating him as if he does, but says it is a bit early to determine. I think it is early because he just had a palate repair in march and was in an orphanage for the first 16 mts of his life so he really had lots of delays. The SPL said he might have a Motor processing issue, not sure about oral and that he may have Apraxia. It has only been 1 week so she is observing him more. > > Hi Everyone, > > So our private SLP has asked my to refrain from using the term Apraxia for for >3 yr son. She has advised that he has Oral Motor Issues...is this the >samething? can anyone shed some light? > > Thanks! > ------------------------------------
