We purchased an iPad for our 14yo non-verbal son with CP for

entertainment purposes. He uses a Dynavox for speech output

and it's recommended NOT to confuse communication systems

(different layouts, symbols, syntax etc). I put mostly book

apps on the iPad and how loves it (in fact can get addicted

to it, stims etc). BUT for our kids with access challenges,

the iPad is not truly accessible to him independently. For

example, the screen is touch sensitive only in the correct

spot, if his hands hits another part of the screen it

immediately launches the search screen and other annoying

glitches that require some adult intervention. And I agree,

that the iPad, like all electronic media, should be used in

moderation. Both my kids just LOVE it and it portable for

long car rides (be sure to bring the cord to re-charge!)

There are loads of fun and educational apps for young kids.
