How old is your son? Here in NY, Early Intervention is run thru the State, not

the school district. We dont transition to the school till Preschool at 3yrs

old. My 12 yo son had Speech thru EI for 2x 30 minute sessions. Once he

transitioned to the school district, I brought him 3x a week for 30 minute

sessions. Once the therapist saw how well he was able to participate for 30 min,

she suggested we make his session 2x 45minutes. I had my daughter at teh time,

she was 3-6mos old while I was transporting him 3x a week to Speech. We tried it

and it was fine. He was discharged a few months later. My point is that there is

no way he would have made it for an hour-long session at 3yo and no one in Early

Intervention would even try to do that. We were lucky we made it thru 30min

sessions some days!! I'm just wondering how old your son is because if he's less

than 3yo an Individual session would never get anything accomplished, nevermind

a Group session! Group sessions work better for school age kids, starting at

5yo/K and above and NOT prek and forget the 0-3 kids. Dont know how an SLP could

possibly have realistic expectations about making a change like that!!

The way I needed to request an increase in sessions at the 0-3 EI level was to

talk to my EI Service Coordinator. They'd arrange a new SLP Evaluation and that

would determine if she qualified for an increase in sessions. Do you have a

Service Coordinator for 0-3?

they will not tell you this but the under 3 program can have an iep too.  I had

one with my daughter because she was going to the program only for speech not

for school.  We had them promise me so many times a week and for how every many

minutes I wanted.  I had a lawyer there.  they were very nice to me then.

one of my son's therapist is with the school districts 0-3 program.  We

started seeing them in May and we saw her for 30 min a week. Now they are back

from summer vacation and she told me that my son will have 30 min a week with

her for a few weeks while she figures out how all of her students are doing then

she is putting them in groups of 3 for a 1 hour session a week.  I told her

that group therapy is not recommended for Apraxia and that my son needs more

therapy than once a week.  She just said " sorry, that's all that we can do. "

Is it only once the child is school age that I can request more therapy and call

a meeting or can I do that for the early intervention 0-3 program also?  The

therapist didn't even mention any steps that I could take to get more therapy

through the school district.

My son will be 3 in November. We have had a speech therapist coming to our

home for 2 months now 1x a week for 1-on-1 therapy through EI. (they

proposed 2x a month- I pushed for 1x a week.) The therapist has been great

in leaving resources for me to work with during the week and helping him to

make more attemps. (I asked her to bring some potty word cards last week

and she did..) It has been a great help for me to know what to do better.

2-3x a week would be wonderful and he would definitely benefit from

the1-on-1 therapy. I could only get them to agree to 1x for now.

I too wonder how to best get more for him when he turns 3? I KNOW he will

benefit from it as he needs repetition and consistency. I hope I can avoid

getting a lawyer involved... it would be nice to know what to go armed with

and to know what they are entitled to!

I have been told my son can go to the preschool 4x a week when he turns 3.

He doesn't need the school...just speech therapy.

They darn well better tell you in EI! Its not a secret. Its called an

IFSP--Individual Family Service Plan. The IEP is Individual Education Plan. Your

service coordinator should have given forms to sign outlining the amount of

services and number of times per week. Any changes to that require a new

evaluation and another meeting with your team.

EI or any 0-3 program is Family Based, the needs of the family are the most

important consideration along with the therapy of the child. They should be

coming to your house, do they? We had 6-7 sessions a week in-home until she

transferred to the school district at 3yo.

My daughter was in EI until she was 3 and then 6 month later did the 4 day a

week full day program. The reason for the delay was that I thought the same as

you that she only needed the speech and not the school so I took her privately.

I am not exactly sure what prompted us to have our public school CST evaluate

her for preschool but we are so happy we did. She gets speech all 4 days and not

to mention the socialization and the preparation she gets for kindergarten. She

has come so far from last year(when she started) that you would not believe it's

the same kid. She will also be ahead of the game when she does kindergarten next

year as she knows her way around the school and the school routine and the

school personnel. The teacher does lots of things with the other grades so Aly

already knows a lot of teachers and kids. Maybe just look into it you can always

say no or pull him out if it's not working. Just a thought from someone who

thought her kid just needed speech. Debbie

he doesnt need the school, just the speech? Here in NY, kids who transition from

EI to preschool need to qualify for 2 or more services before they will be

offered their services in a full or half day program at a special needs

preschool. My 9yo Apraxia daughter had every service under the sun in EI. So she

had no problem qualifying for the full-day program at a special needs school,

including busing. So that meant she got all her services in her school day and

they always told me that besides her services, the rest is just regular prek

stuff: letters, numbers, colors--all the things to get ready for K. I didnt pay

a dime for two years she was there! But my two sons, who only needed speech,

only had that one service. Coming out of EI, our team made it clear they would

not qualify for special needs prek. So I paid for their typical prek in town and

2x a week I brought them to their SLP in our school district.

If you are able to qualify for prek with services and its only Speech, I'd

surely be looking into that possibility. Also most school administrators dont

like to hear parents talk about Entitlement! Its a bad connotation word when

you're wondering what they qualify for under the law!!

Kids who have November birthdays are given the option of transitioning to the

prek program in January or staying in EI till that Spring and transitioning in

the following Fall. Good luck.
