Guest guest
I would like to introduce myself. I read everyone’s comments but I don’t think I’ve ever posted before. My name is . I have three children and my middle child, , has apraxia. She is 39 months old now. started services with EI when she was eighteen months old. At that point, all she could say was Mamama, Dadadada, and Wawawa over and over again. She had quite a few noises that she used to communicate but those were her only words/sounds. After reading The Late Talker, I knew that had apraxia (she also has oral apraxia) but it took me until she was 28 months old to have someone diagnose her with it. Along the way, she was diagnosed with mild autism, but we are not sure of this diagnosis. One doctor says she has it and another says she does not. (More on that story another time.) It has taken me a long time to decide to start giving supplements. We started with one capsule of EFA fish oils about three months ago but we couldn’t really tell if they were doing anything. We moved her up to two capsules and still weren’t sure. She was making progress but had also begun attending a pre-school class for severe disorders of speech. She also receives OT and an hour of private speech therapy a week. Then we went on vacation in August and we took a break from all of her services. I wasn’t very good about giving her the fish oil regularly and then we went about a week without her taking it. Holy Moly is it making a difference! She was a nightmare. The biggest difference I see with the fish oil is in the area of her sensory integration issues. She is talking more but the month without taking the fish oils and without OT made her a mess. She was literally climbing up the walls. (She’s a sensory seeker.) She started getting better after putting her back on the fish oils even though OT has not started up again. During this time, I decided to buy Nutriiveda. I was EXTREMELY skeptical. I was not really planning on it making any difference particularly in her speech but she is a lousy eater and I just want her to be healthier in general. I figured I would use basically it as a multivitamin. It took me several weeks to get any into her. She is still only getting maybe ½ of a scoop a day as I have to give it to her like medicine and bribe her. I am absolutely shocked by the results. She is definitely becoming clearer almost immediately. Her older sister’s name is and has called her “Huh†for over 18 months. In the last month or so she has occasionally (like three or four times) called her “Huh-wuh†which we thrilled about – a second syllable. Within days of starting NV she was calling her “Huh-wuh†all the time and now it has progressed to “Huh-ruh.†Our whole family couldn’t be happier – especially her sister. She has also started saying words and things that I had no idea that she knew. Today she put on one of her sister’s dresses and told me that she was wearing “polka dots†– which she was. Obviously the “polka dots†wasn’t very clear but I had no idea that she knew what polka dots were in the first place. I can’t say for certain that it’s the NV or the fish oils or the therapy or a combination of them all but something is working and I’m certainly not going to fix something that isn’t broken.
