HI : there's been some recent discussion on this. Search the archives

under " Total " and " cereals " . I recognize TOTAL contains sugar, and I'm

willing to ingest the small amt that's in it (when you taste TOTAL, it's not

at all sweet and tastes nothing like the saturated with sugar, sugar-coated

cereals on the market). I feel the bene's I get from Total more than

offsets the sugar. And it hasn't affected my weight or any other

biomarkers. I'm not one of the more extremist CRONIES; in fact I

occasionally have a small piece of a sugar dessert when out at a social

function. Even Walford admits to this once in a while. Just keep it in

small quatities.

I try to eat the plain TOTAL (without raisins) as it's lowest in CALS.

Comes in a blue box and says " Whole Grain Total " . BTW I once e-mailed the

company and asked them to produce a no-sugar Total (since people can always

add their own sugar) - to no avail I'm afraid. But feel free to do the same

and maybe if enough people did so, we'd get some results.

Yes, page 265 is where I saw mention of fortified cereals. It mentions Grape

Nuts (somehow I remembered it as Total). Anyway, I agree with the comments of

Francesca and others on this. I eat a lot of Total because I like it; I only

meant that I don't count the vitamins in it as part of my ODA. I look for the

vitamins elsewhere. If one's reason for tolerating the sugar is that it's

offset by the vitamins, just remember p. 265.

Thanks --

Francesca,

I do not have my copy of BT120YD on hand, but recall a similar

type of statement. I know Walford mentions to investigate vitamin

supplements carefully because they pass through so many hands that the

stuff we get on the shelf is pretty old. He specifically stated to favor

supplements " manufactured by " rather than those distributed by. I believe

I buy Nature Made or Nature Bounty (I do not recall which one) which is one

of the few manufactured by the distributor.

While I do not think it's a big deal to have Total in the morning

(I agree the sugar is trivial) it may not be the best source of

supplementation you can find. Maybe a bowl of Shredded wheat, Bran Flakes

(no sugar added), or grape nuts (favored by Walford I believe) with a

multi-vitamin from a manufacturer would put you ahead of the game as far as

nutrients.
