maybe you should try throwing a beach ball instead of a baseball for now.

maybe

once he gets the hang of that the baseball might come easier ;later on.  my son

had great difficulty at that age hitting a ball and bat. so to ease his

frustration (and my husbands) we tried the beachball instead so that we could

end on a positive note.

Subject: [ ] Question about sports?

I know I probably should not worry, which is why I came here to ask instead. My

son with apraxia is now five years old and he has apraxia in his body too. Today

my husband was throwing a softball to him and he can't hit the ball with the bat

no matter how close my husband stands to him, even throwing the ball right at

the bat. Is this part of apraxia? He is in speech and occupational therapy and

he takes fish oils all which have helped. But what do you do for this? Please

help. Kate

Softballs are huge and too heavy for kids. My very-typical 5yr old just did our

town T-Ball this past Spring. Dont worry, none of them can hit a ball, thats why

they start with TBall and none of them are coordinated! and he turned five last

winter! Most sports stores like Modells have lighter T Balls that look like

baseballs but dont hurt as much and kids T's that you can use at home to work on

coordination. Starting with a softball wont make it easier to hit. For my

special needs daughter, we do Buddy Ball or Challenger Leagues for soccer in the

Fall and T Ball this past Spring for her too. I'd suggest trying a kid league or

Challenger league and no softballs!

another idea is to throw scarves - jugglers use this method to learn to juggle,

but I had a PT use the idea with Josh years ago - the slow movement of the scarf

gives the kid time to focus eyes and head, and get hands ready to catch.  as

the kid gets used to catching the scarves, then you can ball them up, then

switch to balls of varying sizes.  also, sensory balls are good to use - the

different sensations from the different types of balls " wakes up " sensations in

the fingers, hands, arms, and shoulders.

good luck!!  Josh got the hang of throwing really well and he has a terrific

aim (even took gold in state special olympics competition in softball throw!),

catching has been harder going but he is doing pretty well with larger balls.

My little brother (totally typical) couldn't hit a softball until he was 6 or 7.

Practice Practice Practice. My son couldn't hit the ball and I pitched to him

until my arm was going to fall OFF. Two years later he loves to play ball and

wants to be on a Travel Team. He still strikes out occasionally and some kids

are much better but I am PROUD of him for staying with it!
