Guest guest
, Matt is now 9. He did not say his first word until he was 25 months. His first word was *all done* and it was said at his early childhood development center (Matt has had OT since he was 7 months old and then moved to the early childhood development center at 18 months - where he had OT, PT, SPL). He did not say another word for weeks and weeks. I could not wait to hear him say something. Funny thing - at this point - I can't remember the first word he said at home - isn't that wild. Matt also said words for a while and then they'd disappear - some taking years to reappear. This is such a heartbreaking disorder. Matt had a really good signing vocabulary by the time he was 4 years. That was the first time he had a teacher who did not know that many signs - so he STOPPED signing altogether. He wanted to communicate and at that point realized that not everyone could talk with their hands - so he stopped - except to use as an explanation point or underline an important point - like give me that ball!!! so he say ba and sign ball. But he'd keep his hands still when anyone tried to teach him more signs or tried to get him to sign something for them. It was a really difficult 2 years or so when he had few words and would NOT sign for anyone anymore. Stubborn boy knew what he wanted - and at 9 he can talk - so who knows - maybe he knew what he was doing. Matt has been coming to my office since he was a small baby. One of my friends who had not seen or talked to him since the last time he visited the office - 3 or so months ago - could NOT get over how incredibly well he was doing. He talked to her for 15 minutes - in full sentences - small sentenced - but full sentences - and lots of sentences strung together, discussed things he had done over the holidays - with clarity, he aswered her questions. It was amazing to watch. When he wondered off to visit with someone - she looked at me and her jaw dropped. She could NOT believe the conversation they had just had. She had goosebumps. > > > > Is it because his school situation is better? Nutriiveda? Was going to have this amazing burst anyway? I just don't know. But I'm so excited by what I'm see. > > > > OH! Last night - he heard the phone ring - I did not - but I did hear him in the back bedroom talking on it. I assumed he was pretending to talk on the phone - which is a favorite game of his - while he played a computer game. I hear him talking to a friend of mine who had stopped by earlier that day. I assume he has picked her to *talk* to because he had just seen her that morning. He runs from the back bedroom to the living room and tells me that Jeanie is on the phone. I am trying to get us out of the house to pick my mother up at the airport and give him a vague - that's nice honey. He runs to the back bedroom again. I follow with his shoes in my hand - sort of annoyed that he isn't putting on his shoes cuz we have to leave. I see the phone off the hook. I pick up the handset to hang it up and hear my girlfriend's voice. Oh my goodness - he had a conversation on the phone - with someone who is not a family member and who he is comfortable talking to. > > He said hello, answered her questions, followed her instructions to tell me she was on the phone and WAS soooo proud of himself. > > > > LOL - I am standing there holding the handset - totally ignorning my girlfriend - while I gave Matt a bunch of high fives to celebrate the great job he had done. > > > > He knew what he had done was HUGE. Guest guest
Matt was just evaluated this fall for school (they do it every 3 years) so I know the assessed range. His range is language is from 3 to 6. Won't it be interesting to see where he is at his next assessment?!! > > Does matt talk age appropriate or is it still limited? >
