If you have a child or work with a child with ASD, take advantage of hearing information from an expert in the field. Contemporary Issues in Autism and Aperger's: A workshop for parents and professionals Sponsored by the Parent Resource Center ot the Riskin Children's Center / Thursday, December 3, 2009 9:00 am - 4:00 pm Location: Jewish Community Center 199 Scoles Avenue Clifton, NJ 07012 On Thursday December 3rd the Parent Resource Center, a program of the Riskin Children's Center in Clifton, will present a workshop for professionals and parents. The workshop, entitled Contemporary Issues in Autism and Asperger's, will feature Dr. Ami Klin, Director of the Autism Program at Yale. Dr. Klin will be describing new research on social engagement deficits in young children with Autism as well as challenges and approaches in serving adolescents with Autism and Asperger's. Dr. Klin has authored more than 150 publications in the field of Autism and related conditions, and he is a much sought after speaker both nationally and internationally. His research focuses on the social mind and the social brain and he has explored, as well, aspects of Autism from infancy through adulthood. Currently he is working to develop techniques for earlier detection of vulnerabilities for Autism which can be observed in the first few months of life. New Jersey, which has alarmingly high rates of Autism, is struggling to cope with the problem. Health insurance carriers often do not cover the cost of therapy, and the financial burdens for families with Autistic children can be extreme. While national rates for the incidence of Autism have increased, with the accepted figure at approximately one out of every 150 children, the incidence in New Jersey is almost 70% higher, a staggering one child out of every 94. Although much of the focus of Dr. Klin's research deals with discovering the signs of Autism at its earliest stages, he does not lose sight of the human element. In describing those who he studies, he is quick to point out that " all deserve a stab at happiness and a fulfilling life. " Acknowledging the singular focus that many people on the Autism spectrum possess, he adds that " most can make contributions to society whereas some can in fact, build on their specific strengths and reach unique achievements in science, art and technology. " Dr. Klin is a passionate advocate for acceptance of people with Autism in ways which treat them as individuals. He states that they are no more alike in their needs than other groups in society, and he sees the need to tailor treatments and interventions accordingly. Parents and professionals alike will have the opportunity to benefit from Dr. Klin's experience and expertise. He provides cutting-edge information and insights on current research and treatment of Autism Spectrum Disorders. The Riskin Children's Center, which is hosting Dr. Klin, provides a high-quality, easily accessible center for evaluation and treatment of children facing challenges that impede their development into fully-functional adults. These challenges can include psychological, educational, neurological, environmental and social problems. The Riskin Children's Center integrates services under one roof, comprehensively addressing the child as a whole. Continuing Education Units for social workers and Professional Development Hours for educators will be offered.
