Guest guest
Hi Barbara, I've followed some of your posts over the last couple of months and am wondering if you can answer a couple of questions. I am the mom of an apraxic child that is five years old and currently doing well. I am also enrolled in a Speech-Language Pathology Master's Program in Northern California, and I began classes earlier this month. I want to become PROMPT trained and eventually certified, and would like to receive other training appropriate for apraxia. Could you recommend specific programs/courses that would best address motor planning issues? Basically, what would you recommend that I do at this time? I am eager to apply the appropriate therapy for my son's needs, as well as prepare myself for the field, and from what I understand, I can take courses with my student status. Please feel free to email me privately. Thank You, Hanagan ttaniaa0000@...; ; helpmespeak@... From: helpmespeak@... I believe in & use structured o-m because I've seen it work first hand. I use o-m, then Prompt w/speech activities. There is disagreement in my field because not all SLPs define o-m in the same way. Some use a very old way of thinking that all it is is lip licking, tongue wagging or other tongue-outside-the-mouth activities. Not me! That is not true at all for structured o-m ex! We use a variety of fun oral tools that are structured in a specific way to improve the stability, control, coordination, & dissociation of the tongue, lips, & jaw. In Prompt we use our hands to on the face in specific ways to show the child's mouth HOW to move for each sound. The whole wd is 'mapped' or planned on the face to help the motor system discover how to make the sounds. Caroline Bowen has not apparently experienced Prompt or struct o-m done in the correct way. No disrespect to her but she & others only think that a child w/apraxia uses 'phonological processes' or immature error patters. And that if we just practice the correct pattern, the child will learn mostly via imitation. Any parent or Prompt/ TT trained SLP knows that the reason that approach doesn't wk for kids is that there is a Motor Planning problem that interferes w/correct or any sound production. We don't blow bubbles just for fun. We blow them to round the lips, retract the tongue, use diaphragmatic breathing, use controlled jaw movments & more. Then we follow that w/speech activities. Some say not enough 'evidenced based' research has been done. Well, ev.based res. has 3 components, the research, the client's perspective of its usefulness, & the SLP' perspective. I don't know many parents who would volunteer their child for a dbl blind study w/the chance of not getting Prompt or TT. That would b time wasted. There are many techniques we use in speech that have not been researched well but that work. For ex, there are many times during a session when we might think of a new way for a client to imitate a snd. If it wks, use it. Let me know if u have any further questions. I have decided to follow my 'gut' instinct, and go with the therapist trained in this field of therapy. I hope I'm making the right decision for my little boy. _________________________________________________________________ Hotmail: Free, trusted and rich email service. http://clk.atdmt.com/GBL/go/196390708/direct/01/
