Guest guest
Hi Jeanne, Can you poost this for me please? Thanks. My son is 2.5 and has apraxia. He has been in ABA for 5 months and is responding well. However we think it is time to focus mainly on speech and motor planning. We live in Haworth NJ, Bergen county and I am looking for resources. I have heard of centers in central Jersey that focus on motor planning, speech, music therapy etc. Does anyone know if there is a center in this part of NJ that is great? Thanks, Jen
Guest guest
From: Chaim Schneider [mailto:Chaim.Schneider@...] Sent: Wednesday, January 05, 2011 2:18 PM jbmistletoe@... Subject: Apraxia question Hi Jeanne, I found your name on the Apraxia-Kids website and hope you can help me, or guide me to someone who can help. I live in East Brunswick, NJ and have a daughter named Gabi (almost 4 years old) with Down syndrome and apraxia. While we know a lot about Down syndrome, the apraxia diagnosis is quite new for us and so we aren't yet that familiar with local resources available for apraxia. I wanted to see if you have input on two topics. Firstly, Gabi's doctor recommended that we pursue a language-based, Total Communication classroom setting for my daughter (rather than the special ed classroom that she's currently in). I wanted to see if you have any insight into such programs and know how I can find out more about them. I have not yet pursued this topic with my school district - I wanted to first do a little research on my own and have a game plan in mind before moving forward with our school district. Secondly, the doctor also recommended that we look into augmentative devices and potentially try to get Gabi comfortable using them. I don't know much about this either, but was told that the best approach would be to get an AAC evaluation and then assess the situation. Finally, can you let me know what support groups/services there are in Middlesex county related to apraxia? Please let me know if you have any insight into these topics - especially the first question about schooling which is one that I have had little success finding info about when searching online. Feel free to either call or email me at your convenience. Thank you very much for your time. I greatly appreciate it.
