I don't know your answer but I think you should contact a lawyer or advocate to

help you. This is totally unacceptible to have to wait so long. Maybe you

could find an answer on the website http://www.wrightslaw.com/ which has

information about special education laws.

I am so sorry this is happening to you!

[ ] Live in AZ need advice!

My son is 26 months old, and we have had growing concerns regarding his speech

since 18 months. At two I finally had him evaluated by a speech therapist (who I

was not impressed with), and found out that insurance would not pay for

coverage, at this time I contacted the state (we live in AZ), and found this

group as well. My son shows many signs of apraxia, but it is too early to tell.

He has a very limited vocabulary, with poor imitation. When the speech therapist

from our state came out, he was evaluated as being 50% delayed with expressive

speech, and receptive speech was fine (which we knew). She also said that his

speech pattern did not follow normal delay, but they would have to work with him

in order to see what is going on. This qualified him for state services, for

1-2x/week fro an hour. I have been waiting for the speech therapist to contact

me, and when they did not, I contacted the case manager. She let me know that

the speech therapy company

has said that they do not have a speech therapist to send at this time, and she

the case manager ( who is not a speech therapist) could come out and work with

him for a month, and then place him in a 10 wk intensive phono program (which

originally they said that he may go into it by our choice, with the

recommendation of the speech therapist working with him, and only when he has a

better vocab, and has been working with a speech therapist for awhile!). I am at

a loss on what to do!!! Do I have any rights to fight this?? Why would they

qualify him, and take us through a two months process of evaluation, writing

goals, etc, if they did not have a therapist to provide?? Again, I need advice

on what to do next. We live in AZ, in the sdale area, if anyone has any

suggestions for a private speech therapist that would be appreciated as well!!

Hello Live in AZ,

I am not sure of the laws in AZ, but I live in IL and the same thing happened

to us. EI did not have an SLP available when my son needed one, so they sent a

Developmental Therapist out until one was available. My son has apraxia and is

not delayed in anything except for his expressive speech and the Developmental

Therapist was not trained to focus on speech. SO, I found out that you can hire

a private Speech therapist and EI will reimburse you for the number of sessions

per week they advised (Parent Reimbursement Program.) My son sees his private

SLP 2x per week for an hour each time. We have to pay her upfront, but we get

reimbursed by EI. You should ask your Service Coordinator if they have the

Parent Reimbursement Program in AZ.

I hope this helps.

IL

The same thing happened to us and we live in Missouri. We were put on a waiting

list for services until an SLP was available 4 months later. So I fought to have

that extra 4 months of services be added on the end, after she was supposed to

" age out " of EI. It worked and they did. It is never appropriate for someone who

is not an SLP to deliver SLP services. I would contact the Director of the

program to discuss, and if that doesn't work, work your way on up the later.
