The Big Book of Exclamations is a fun new childrens book recently published and

created by a pediatric speech pathologist. It is designed to promote speech

sound development and imitation of gestures, sounds, & word approximations. The

book doesn't have a story to read. Instead, along the bottom of each page there

are prompts that teach parents how to act out the illustrations and interact

with their child using gestures, sounds, or words. Children who are minimally

verbal can feel successful during " story time " as parents are reminded to model

gestures/sounds/ word approximations the child can imitate! This book is also a

gentle way to ease parents into addressing their childs communication delay or

disorder as it lists information about speech/language development and resources

for those seeking advice. The book gives parents fun ideas/strategies for

stimulating sound imitation AND it positively encourages them to set their fears

aside and ask for help.

Many parents harbor such fear when they begin to think something may be " wrong "

with their child, however once they finally take that first step and reach out

for help, they feel such relief! In addition, the book promotes shared

attention, active participation, turn taking, and genuine love! You can see some

of the illustrations first hand and get a better feel for the book by going to

the website. You can find it by searching the title of the book, The Big Book of

Exclamations. What a fun, uplifting resource!
