Guest guest
Get to know Ramapo in 2010! Each summer, Camp Ramapo serves more than 600 children with special needs in a beautiful and engaging outdoor environment about 90 miles from New York City. Ramapo, now in its 88th year, kindles a spirit of hope in exceptional children and offers youngsters opportunities for healthy growth and normal development. Camp Ramapo is an inclusive environment purposefully designed for children having difficulty building and maintaining healthy relationships with peers and adults. The daily program and activities are carefully structured to meet the needs of fragile children who can benefit from a higher-than-average level of supervision, an engaging environment, and a character-building curriculum; all of which Ramapo provides. Ramapo also serves high-functioning children with autistic spectrum disorders who can successfully navigate the camp environment. This includes children with Asperger, Tourette, and Angelman Syndrome. A summer at Ramapo Ramapo for Children provides many challenging activities designed to promote confidence and build trust: · Various athletics including high and low ropes courses; hiking, orienteering and backpacking trips; swimming; canoeing and kayaking. · Arts and crafts, such as woodcraft and ceramics. · Additional activities including a reading center, miniature golf, a discovery center (science and nature) and chess. Campers live in rustic bunks with an average of six peers. Ramapo's one-to-one staff-to-child ratio, excellent training and close supervision of energetic, caring counselors ensure a safe, predictable and highly structured setting which fosters the development of positive social and learning skills. The result is a community in which campers build healthy relationships, increase self-esteem, and improve learning skills.
