Teaneck Speech and Language Center is announcing a new social skills program

for interested children and teenagers ages four and up. Groups are created

based on age and individual needs of participants and are designed to

improve everyday social experiences. Attached please find more details

Teaneck Speech and Language Center: Social Skills Groups

Goals:

To develop and enrich social interactions and ease social difficulties that

children and teenagers encounter

Population:

Children and teenagers ages three and up

Groups are formed by selecting appropriate candidates who would benefit from

working together

Children are " interviewed " to determine overall needs and individualized

goals

Children are paired/grouped appropriately based on age and skill levels, to

complement each other's strengths/weaknesses

Initial group to determine whether the match is in fact appropriate and

suitable

Sessions continue as children develop improved skills

Some groups run for a finite number of weeks while others are conducted on

an ongoing basis

Curriculum:

Topics reflect relevance to individualized groups and ages

Topics may include:

Turn-taking

Conversation

Play dates

Team building

Problem solving

Bullying/Social scripts

Negotiation

Understanding and using humor

Understanding nonverbal language

Understanding and using figurative language

· Materials are selected based on topic and skill that most

appropriately teach, model, and reinforce desired goals
