Guest guest
CONNECTIONS - November 2009 In this issue: Volunteering - Not Just for Holidays Youth Directory Participation Zonta Raising Funds for Women's Health and Safety United Way of Warren County Day of Caring As part of United Way of Warren County's Project Homeless Connect, caring people from throughout the County served as " ambassadors " for the homeless. Some volunteers assisted people in need with a short in-take form and then escorted them to the different agencies/services present where others distributed bags of food, flipped burgers, gave haircuts, and assisted clients choosing clothes and purses. For more information, see their website at www.unitedwayofwc.org. How Many Organizational Goals Should Be Set? As Boards evaluate year-end achievements and look toward the next fiscal or calendar year, we recommend setting four to seven goals for the organization. Research suggests that if you start setting 10-15 goals, you will not fully achieve them and stretch your Board committees too thin with too many tasks. VMC can assist your Board in setting and prioritizing your goals. Contact Carol McKinney at cmckinney@.... Why join a CHAIN? Whether it's providing much needed nourishment or simply visiting a local nursing home to support the staff by bringing them baskets of cheer, individuals and small groups can make quite a difference in their communities. Too often, people plan to volunteer at food banks or soup kitchens for the wonderful experience of helping out where they can see the immediate results of their work not realizing they could also offer support behind the scenes. Since VMC has specialized in finding meaningful volunteer opportunities for more than 35 years, many people reach out to see what's available on specific holidays like Thanksgiving or Christmas. " Most often we find these volunteer sites have as much help as they need, " said Carol McKinney, VMC's executive director. " Instead, we offer these suggestions for alternative volunteer service and ask them to consider non-holiday volunteerism. " Maybe it's giving gifts all year round at juvenile protection facilities and homeless shelters or making sure animal rescue facilities have enough food, lifelong volunteerism can blossom for the whole family by simply looking past the holidays.
