Guest guest
Hi, My 3 yr old daughter has been on fish oils for more than a year now. She went from almost no speech to full speech but with phonological disorder. I also started her off on d-alpha Vit E (just 200 IU) some 2 months ago. She lacks in concentration and is quite a jumpy character so I recently (it's been approx. 7 days now) started her off on Acetyl-L-Carnitine 500 mg a day. However, over the last 3 days it has happnd twice that she has thrown tantrums. She has not done anything like it atleast in the last yr. So what I'm wondering is whether the Carnitine could be causing these sudden tantrums? Also, can someone pls advise me on the appropriate dosage of Carnitine for a 3 yr old weighing in at approx. 35 pounds? Thanks, Nikunj
Guest guest
That happened to my dd who is 9 y.o., she's normally very co-operative but she became the opposite & misbehaved & didn't do as she was asked. I backed down to 1/2 dosage to 250 milligrams. HTH, Yvette A.
Guest guest
Hi Yvette,  Are the dosage approved by the Dr.?? What makes you decided to give to your child the supplement of Carnitine?? I thought you have to get it by prescription from a Dr.? My little one is also very hyper and can't concentrate....Is that a sign to watch for? How much the amount you are giving to your kids? Mine is 2 years and 10 months old.  Thanks,   From: Yvette <y.anderson1@...> Subject: [ ] Re:Carnitine side effects Date: Tuesday, February 9, 2010, 9:25 AM  That happened to my dd who is 9 y.o., she's normally very co-operative but she became the opposite & misbehaved & didn't do as she was asked. Guest guest
Hi , My dd has suspected Miktochondrial Disease, High Functioning Autism & GI issues. She was seen by a DAN! dr as well as Pediatrician who suspects Mito which is probably causing low Carnitine levels according to her blood test for Genetic Testing. Hyperactivity can be a sign of too much, so as I suggested lower to 1/2 & see if you notice a difference. The dosage was decided because of what I observed. Acetyl L-Carnitine can be purchased online. Does ur soon have a dx of Mito? If you would like to discuss further so as not to over burden the board with a discussion of Carnitine feel free to contact me privately at y.anderson1@... Guest guest
Hi Yvette, My child has a slight mito problem, and global apraxia. Acetyl L Carnitine although in the beginning did great things for her, it made her very agitated. Prescription L-Carnitine, which is also available in a supplement. Rx is much stronger, did good things for her. Maybe that formulation is not right. There is a difference between the two supplements.
