Guest guest
Ouch - that sounds awful - but my kids get terrible gas and acid reflux on milk (doesn't affect their speech, just their digestion, seems to be casein) - is there anything besides bones that anyone knows of? I give them regular supplements, but this worries me and would appreciate any suggestions.
Guest guest
If it helps...my son has autism and apraxia. He isn't allergic to milk, but when we eliminated casein, we saw some wonderful changes and his SEVERE reflux vanished...and he was on a senior citizen dose of prevacid prior to that. His reflux disappeared in 36 hours. Our nutritionist recommended a mixture of rice milk (14 oz) mixed with 2 oz coconut milk (for the fat) and a scoop of metagenics' Ultracare for kids (for calcium & protein) which you can find on iherb.com. Ultracare for kids is made for kids with allergies and is gluten/soy/nut etc. free. It tatses like a vanilla shake, he is getting it 3-4x a day. My older son loves it too, so it actually does taste good! This particular combination meets the requirements for infant formula (my son is almost 2 but is in the 8th percentile for weight so I want the extra fat). Before you eliminate milk, I would talk to a nutritionist (we work with Dorfman, she does phone consults)to make sure your child gets everything nutritionally he needs...rice milk alone won't cut it. That being said, my son used to refuse to eat (and 4 of his five foods that he would take were dairy based)and about 6 weeks after we eliminated casein he started trying new things. My guess is this is how long it took his esophagus to heal and at that point eating didn't hurt anymore. I still feel guilty that for the first 19 months of his life he was in physical pain because of dairy, but now feel good he is getting the calcium/fat/protein he needs and is no longer throwing up and crying in pain. He is also on a compounded multi vitamin, fish oil and some other things for nutritional support.
