Guest guest
Yes there are a few people that just add enough water to make NV a paste and feed it that way. Or instead of water they use apple sauce or Hershey syrup etc. There are also people who have used it in feeding tubes -just have to make the correct consistency for that. Not sure if I have that here http://pursuitofresearch.org/serving_suggestions.html but if not will go back and add it for the new sites too. Second question I'm sure some of the SLPs will answer too -but my mom answer is I never cared if my apraxic child repeated words over and over...that is what I wanted. There were a number of times now I can think of where he repeats what I say or his brother as he grew up...almost like when you hear a song you like and try to repeat it so you don't forget the words? When there is a speech issue it's my opinion not to make a huge deal of errors -you have to push but not so much to break, or you can create further issues- for example a form of stuttering can come from too much articulation therapy for an apraxic child. And funny thing about opinions when Tanner had quirks and I would ask around -even from two different SLPs who both had PhDs you can get conflicting advice. So for sure just get all the opinions and from those that work in this area. Again no doubt my son went through this -we didn't make a big deal of it (to me any speech practice was a great thing -it annoyed Dakota but I would just tell Dakota to be complimented that Tanner liked the way he talked so much he wanted to imitate him) and no...Tanner doesn't do this today -other than a normal amount anyone may repeat back what you say if you say it funny etc. =====
Guest guest
I forced NV in my child for a while, but it was such a battle that I quite for awhile. He's back on 1/2 dose and I didn't realize how flat he had become. When I did force it I mixed 1 scoop with 1-2 teaspoons water and it made a pudding like consistency. I alternatively used a medicine syringe to force it, or used a spoon. I think it was about 5 or 6 teaspoons per scoop Have you tried talking to or distracting your son when he's repeating things? My son does this a bit, it's like his mind gets stuck in a loop. Usually if I look in his eyes and ask his a question or if he's singing, start singing a different song, he'll snap out of it. I would be concerned though, if he didn't engage when I was talking to him Liralen > > > > > 1. I asked this earlier but it may have been missed. Is there a way to give the NV as medicine, like concentrate it in water or milk and just syringe or spoon it into the child's mouth? I was thinking of doing this as my boy Spencer has been resistant to getting that full scoop in even though I have put it in everything from chocolate milk to apple juice to ice cream. The problem is I have to really dilute it so he doesn't notice the flavor (he is very picky) and so he just doesn't eat or drink enough the whole day long to actually get it all in! I was thinking of doing the opposite and treating it like medicine, any ideas how to do this? > > > > 2. Does anybody else have a kid with apraxia who repeats themselves a lot? My son has some echolalia which is getting better. But he also repeats phrases and songs over and over. Sometimes it seems like he is excited, other times bored. Sometimes the phrases or songs are out of contect or at " inappropriate times " but other times not. Of course I don't want to discourage him from singing as I know it helps his articulation. His SLP has suggested saying " just one time " when he repeats himself, and that seems to be helping. So far, his therapists have not considered it a perseverative behavior (as in autism) but more related to processing issues or the apraxia. Any suggestions? > > > > Thanks, > > Barbara > > >
Guest guest
I just was reading 's reply and was thinking about my own little guy - I want to say Ethan did a lot of this before his speech came along. He still repeats things that he thinks are funny! Through all that repitition came his own speech eventually - just was reading this and thought back on how I used to worry about what others thought when he did this and wondered all the time when he would say what HE was thinking- but eventually he started saying all kinds of spontaneous things and he amazes me everyday now! Everyone has their own opinion but at the end of the day you know your child best - and its different for everyone - so take the advice that works for you and your family and consider what fits your kiddo - you can put yourself out if you think to hard on it. I used to reassure myself that some speech is better than no speech - and since we went so long without it I was extremely happy that he was showing that he had it - that he was using it - the rest eventually came along with all his hard work and a good support system . ~ Sent on the Sprint® Now Network from my BlackBerry® [ ] Re: Two unrelated questions Yes there are a few people that just add enough water to make NV a paste and feed it that way. Guest guest
Yes, this is how we do it. I started with a syringe, a 5 ml one and made it thin enough with just water. It took a lot of squirting to get 2 scoops in that way, but it worked. Very soon he acquired a taste for it and now I just mix it with water a little thicker,( not too thick as it's sticky like pb that way and with his oral motor issues, he gagged) and spoon it in. He loves it and asks for it first when we sit to eat. He's 3, 35lbs and I give him 2 heaping scoops in am and 1 scoop in pm. (I know it's more than recommended but he showed more surges with the increased dose, as well, he's responded to this with a combination of a few other biomed things, particularly, added high quality zinc picolinate) Hope this helps. > > Yes there are a few people that just add enough water to make NV a paste and feed it that way.
