Guest guest
Hi, Â I have a 12 year old with homework accommodations in his IEP. The wording in his IEP is modification as in his homework is modified. The work is put into several steps. 1. All work is at his grade level ability 2. the class assignments are cut in half (he is only expected to do half or less of the assignment. 3. All reports are no longer that 2-3 pages written . This an example of the way his school work and homework is modified. It was decided this year that my son would not have much homework sent home due they decided that it was only going to stress my son out and not benefit him. So except for a few spelling words every night which he is required to practice reciting verbally there is no homework. They decided to not have him do the homework assignments sent home this year. He is mainstreamed in a regular 6 th grade classroom with a one on one aide for science and social studies. Math and English he has pullout Special Ed classes for. He is not any where near grade level on these 2 subjects. But he does occassionally stay with his class for them but he is there to listen and learn and be with his peers not expected to complete their written assignments then his aide will work on his own assignments during these times.. Â I hope this helps you. I wish you luck. We are struggling with homework. She has changed buildings this year and is with a whole new crew of teachers who are not familiar with her. She is extremely frustrated with homework and it is effecting our entire family. I have met with teacher twice to ask to have it scaled WAY back, which they did for a few days. Last night she had 3 pages of math that she had no clue how to do, a science crossword puzzle that she know 7 out of 15 and was very frustrated that she couldn't spell the words or finish the puzzle. She had to study 5 pages of science notes for a test today. She also has a current event each week, she was very interested in the rescue of the miners, but we couldn't find an article that was manageable for her to read so she left crying that she wanted to talk about it but couldn't fill in the sheet to do it at school. She also has to read 15 minutes a night (which is fine, we do that anyway.) So my question is, do any of you with older kids have homework accommodations? I need some good wording if you have been through this already. I wouldn't mind for example, doing a few review type math problems each night, but I can't teach her new material...I wouldn't mind her reviewing a few vocab/science/social studies terms each night, but not pages and pages of cramming. I'm thinking current event is crazy to try and squeeze in...maybe once a month. Please share your thoughts. Barbara
