Guest guest
Get it- it's great. You can try proloque to go- or speak it for an older child that can type words. Many great apps Sent via BlackBerry by AT & T [ ] ipod touch We are thinking about getting an ipod touch for my nonverbal 4 yr old. What amount of storage whould you need if were to use it as a communication device? Anyone using this with your child any insight or recommendation? Guest guest
We JUST bought one for our 3 ½ year old because he loved his PT’s iPhone. I got a refurbished 8 gb 3rd generation one and so far it’s good. I won’t be putting music (or at least much) on it so I think that’s enough storage for me for now. If you are going to add videos, music, etc. may want a bigger one. I love the flashcard apps. I made a few with our own photos and my voice. Guest guest
We have had the itouch with Proloquo2go for over a year now. My son is 4 ½ and he uses it quite a bit in school. It is easy to program and customize. We also bought a used one with 8 g which worked fine. However, my son is very mouthy and put the external speaker in his mouth and then back into the itouch and fried the mother board. I then bought a new one and this time got a heavy duty case for it so he couldn’t do something like that again. A few recommendations I would give if you are using it as a communication device that I have stumble across by trial and error are: · Don’t load any other games on it. I made that mistake and now wants to play games more than use the device to communicate. I thought that it would motivate him as a reward when he did something good with the Proloquo2go but it became a distraction. · Definitely get an external speaker. I found a very good case with a built in speaker called iMainGo2. The external speaker is very loud. This was an issue at school with other speakers. The teachers couldn’t hear it. · Set the ground rules if you have other older siblings. They will want to play with it too. No one else should use it. This is not a toy for but a tool to him help. · If there are any other fine motor issues the iPad might be better because it is bigger. We are thinking about getting the iPad to compliment the iTouch. · Make sure you back-up the iTouch regularly. The apps are easy to delete on the iTouch. Just hold the icon down for a few seconds and the app will wiggle then if you tap it again it will delete. It does give you a warning message which meant nothing to my son who then deleted it. Luckily it was backed up and we only lost a little bit of programming. There is no way to disable that. So frequent back-ups are your best bet. Good luck. Guest guest
I bought my son a refurbished 8 gb iPod Touch as well and put some games on it and a few kiddie songs on it. I can always re-sync the phone and add or take away apps that he is bored with to make more room. He doesn't need anything much bigger than an 8g. ________________________________ From: Stilwell <shannonstilwell@...> Sent: Mon, November 8, 2010 9:39:23 AM Subject: RE: [ ] ipod touch We JUST bought one for our 3 ½ year old because he loved his PT’s iPhone. Guest guest
I plan on getting one too for my 9yo apraxia dd. My 12 yo has his own, but I dont want to put apps for her on his, or he'd never get it back! Luckily, we have an Apple store within 30min drive and they will take trade-ins..so I plan on trading in his old ipod for some credit towards her ipod touch. > > We JUST bought one for our 3 ½ year old because he loved his PT's iPhone. Guest guest
Ditto on the Otterbox and ditto on Amazon. I got one too and it's VERY worth it with a toddler! I love My First Words app and Toddler Flashcards app. The first one is the one where I put our own photos (photos of me, daddy, dog, etc.) and I added a very cheap ($2 from Amazon) small microphone so I could record the names of the items in my voice and then word is written out too! It's great! From: [mailto: ] On Behalf Of Lindsey Estes Sent: Monday, November 08, 2010 9:07 AM Subject: [ ] ipod touch My son (almost 4) has one and we only got the 8gb. We don't have any of the communication apps, but he plays a lot of learning games, flash cards, etc. He loves it! He is saying the words with his flash card app. It's a great communication tool. Just check the apps for how much space they'll eat up and you'll know what size to get. Most of them aren't very big. I would definitely get an Otterbox to protect it. They are worth every penny. Get one from Amazon.com and it's a little cheaper than on Otterbox.com. We've had a couple of broken screens we replaced...then got the otterbox. ) Lindsey

Guest guest
This was posted about a week ago, incase there are some who didnt see it then, its worth sharing again! Apple Puts Spotlight On Disability Offerings In App Store By Shaun Heasley | October 26, 2010 Apple is highlighting a growing number of apps catering to individuals with special needs with a featured special education section in its App Store. The section titled " Special Education " launched late last week and includes 72 applications for the iPhone and 13 applications for the iPad in 10 categories ranging from communication to emotional development and life skills, according to Trudy Muller, an Apple spokeswoman. The special education category is currently showcased as one of four editorial features in the App Store. Apps, which can be used on Apple's iPhone, iPad or iPod devices, have become increasingly popular in the special needs community in recent years, serving as everything from assistive technology devices to organizational tools and teaching aids. > > I'd love to know more apps for 3 1/2 year old too! > >
Guest guest
My 12 yo son uses it, but you'd need to know how to spell and type/text since it speaks whatever is typed. he speaks very well and uses it just to play. > > Has anyone used the tap to talk program? Guest guest
We have the tap to talk program on my 3 year olds ipad. It is cheaper than proloque2go. We also found that it was a little less overwhelming for my 3 year old. She just isn't ready for proloque to go. I like the program, there are a few things I'd change, but most relate to my daughters fine motor delays. > > Has anyone used the tap to talk program? Guest guest
We are getting our daughter a Nintendo DSi XL for Christmas and loading the Tap to Talk program on it.She is 3 years old and only says few words but is far more advanced with her receptive language. I think it will be great for her have you watched the demo on their site. I think it is great because for my daughter she does not understand action pictures or emotion pictures so how I understand it you have feelings, home, food etc and if she picks mad if say sad and she could then pick other options from there such as a hug picture. So much better than carrying around the big book of pics and trying to page through to find the pic you just don't have. Melinda > > Has anyone used the tap to talk program? Guest guest
We have both in this house, my 12 yo has ipod touch and my 5yo has DSi. The speech apps arent available on the DSi, maybe on the DSi XL? I looked thru the games on the DSi and they're really just that, games. Theres and Education section for Soduko, learning spanish, french and piano but no speech games. If I was going out to buy DSi XL or the DSi vs the ipod touch, I'd go for the Touch since they're all in the same price range anyway. > > > > Has anyone used the tap to talk program?
