There is also a Pediatric Group associated with NYU Medical Center. I know other

parents who have gone to Dr. Furlan! Heres their information. The site says Dr.

Furlan has an office in NJ.

I live in Florida amd both of my kids have autism. Each year I have them get an

eye exam. The do,tor dialatez their eyes. Last year one if my sons had a

terrible reaction from the dialation. He became very hyper and wouldn't sleep

for several nights. I called out Dan Dr and he told me to check to se e if

there was thermerisol in the drops. I got tbe labelz of all three drops used and

there it was listed. I was so aurprised. The dr said he had never heard of any

reaction to dialation before. I called a cmpounding pharmacy to see if they can

make it mercury free but he said it couldn't be done.

Has amyone had ny similar experience with their child?

Most of the Pediatric Neuro-Opthamologists I've heard of are associated with

Childrens Hospitals. The one we use is in one of the best childrens hospitals,

we were sent to him when my daughter was a baby because of her Hydrocephalus. He

does eye exams as they relate to issues with her actual brain and if theres

pressure on her eyes because of the Hydrocephalus. But I'm sure he does all the

typical testing that kids would need. I took her to a " regular " opthamologist

who treats adults and kids, and they just dont have the patience (LOL) that the

PEdiatric doctors have. So now we just stick with him, he's a 45 min drive but

worth every minute. Check the childrens hospital where you are and see if they

have one there.

Unless your child needs surgery why would you take him to a pediatric

ophthalmologist and not a pediatric developmental optometrist? Kate

Opthamologists are MD's and Optometrists are not. I'd take my typical kids to an

Optometrist, but not my special needs daughter..I'd want that MD after their

name.

I agree, a child with special needs should see a pediatric opthalmologist. Both

my Pdd-Nos children have been seen by a pediatric opthalmologist since infancy.

My daughter has had 2 eye surgeries. We see Dr. MD of Long Island

Pediatric Opthalmolgy & Strabismus in Port Jefferson NY and Plainview NY. Even

though my son has no further vision issues ( they thought he had a misshapen

optic nerve at birth) they told me that they would still serve as his eye

specialist even into his 20's and same for my daughter. They are wonderful and

travel all over the world as well to do eye surgeries on kids in underdeveloped

nations.

I will agree about the Opthamologist. If you have a child with language delay,

they seem to be more capible of finding the issues that cannot be communicated.

Ours is AWESOME, but in Missouri. My daughter has been in glasses since her

first birthday, and has undergone one surgery.
