Guest guest
Francesca, I asked my wife about this. There is osteoporosis here but she doesn`t know anyone with it - she has only heard about it on the news. I don`t see many people here with obvious bone deformities - I have seen some but those people were probably 90 or so. Overall the older people here are MUCH more vital than the ones in America. People here generally don`t use canes, walkers, etc. BUT, and this is a big but.. people with disabilities and who are handicapped in some way are not accepted as openly in Japanese society as in the U.S... According to my wife it is common for people who may have problems walking etc to just stay home. So you don`t see many people in wheelchairs ever, etc. So I guess I can`t give you a definitive answer on the osteo situation here. One of the theories kicked around on the listsis that if we all had been on CRON diets since birth (like Okinawans), thenperhaps the "outbreak" of osteo wouldn't have happened; that it's because ofthe loss of significant weight that causes the decrease in bone mass. Whatis the situation in Okinawa afa bone health? Do you see many oldstersstooped over or with 'dowager's humps" ?on 6/15/2002 10:20 AM, Eddie at vlad_storm@... wrote:
