If not, I would love any suggestions.. is Carlson brand better? +++Donna, yes some cod liver oil contains synthetic vitamins A and D, which we are finding is quite common. Therefore the best cod liver oil that I can find to date is Garden of Life Old World Icelandic, available for $10.69 US per bottle at iHerb (you get $5.00 off your first order if you give them my rewards number, which is EWI284): http://www.healingnaturallybybee.com/resource/iherb.php I suggest you buy 2 bottles or more at a time, since you need to take 2 tablespoons per day, so 1 bottle last less than 2 weeks. > > also, I need to add another fish oil for my vitamin A, so i was thinking of buying Natural factors Halibut liver oil. It contains Vitamin A, 10000IU and Vitamin D 400IU. +++You do not take both cod liver oil and fish oil+vitamin A. You either take one or the other depending upon your exposure to the sun. Since most of us don't expose 85% of our skin for 20 minutes during the right time of the day every day it is best to take cod liver oil all year around. See this article which explains sun exposure and when you take fish oil plus vitamin A, as opposed to taking cod liver oil: http://www.healingnaturallybybee.com/articles/cod2.php The best, Bee
Guest guest
The capsules I believe you're asking about are the Nordic Naturals Pro-EFA and Pro-EPA. This is what we have always used, and our son was about the same age as yours when we started giving them. We checked first with our pediatrician, who enthusiastically agreed that they would not hurt him. Always best to keep your doctor in the loop! Hope that helps. Guest guest
Hi Lori, hope my answer isn't " fishy " !, but it's nordic naturals complete 3-6-9. I just use a push pin to squeeze it out. and if you're travelling, i just push the push pin into the container cap until i am ready to use it. you don't have to refrigerate the gel caps, but i wouldn't leave them out in high heat either. The dose we started with was 2 gelcaps nordic naturals 3-6-9 and 1 gelcap of nordic naturals EPA. hth sandy ________________________________ From: lori <lormik@...> Sent: Tue, March 2, 2010 1:46:55 PM Subject: [ ] fish oil questions  I have my 2.5 year old son on Nordic Naturals Cod Liver Oil. Guest guest
Due to the FDA; companies have to put certain things on the bottles of fish oils...unless that exact formula and brand is used in research. That would be insane to say that children can't take fish oils until after 5!!! The amount of research on the importance of the PUFAs for healthy brain and eye developmental alone is overwhelming and that's like saying your breast milk isn't good for your baby because it has EFAs in it -so wait till he's 5 to breast feed. Just insane! Just to be clear -one regular capsule of ProEFA is about equivalent to the dosage the FDA approved for infant formula -and the Jr is an exact half dosage. So you are giving your child 1/2 of what an infant would get in his bottle per serving! And if you want to see an example of a product used in research and the comparable dosages on the bottles (which by the way to give you a head's up are quite high -even for kids) Efalex has been used in studies -notice for the first 3 months they want you to use 3 to 6 capsules a day -and that's children 2-5 years old...of course this is due to the way the research was done: Efalex is the formula my son started on -most of us don't use it now as it doesn't contain the EPA or if it does- trace amounts. Our group found the EPA to be SOOOO important and can assure you that while I had Tanner on the dosage on the bottle because back then like you I thought that's what I had to follow- when I switched Tanner to 1 capsule of ProEFA he had a surge....going from 6 capsules to 1 and he had a surge! That's because of the EPA...but point being I too didn't know what I didn't know. That the FDA has rules that don't always make much sense and that's why some of the people that are in the greatest need of PUFAs are " protected " from them -pregnant women and growing children ahhhhhhhhhhh OK here's the scoop on Efalex Dosage: Children 2 to 5 years of age, take 1-3 gelcaps per day with food or drink. Adults and children 5 years and older, take 2-3 gelcaps per day with food or drink or as recommended by your physician or other healthcare provider. Taking this product for the first time: The amounts should be doubled for the first 12 weeks. 240 mg of DHA, 48 mg of Gamma Linolenic Acid, http://www.nutrivene.com/view_item.php?ProductID=23 And EyeQ has been in research too -so you'll notice once again way higher dosage We advise taking two capsules per day with food. If you are starting supplementation after a long break or for the first time, we suggest a daily intake of six capsules per day for the first twelve weeks, in order to build up the body’s levels of essential fatty acids. Just looking quick but it's about the same formula per capsule as the ProEFA http://www.equazen.co.uk/default.aspx?pid=43 & prodgrp=14 & type=eyeq So in comparison instead of 6 capsules a day...you are using not even 1 capsule...again a half dosage of what would be in a baby's bottle. This is why it's good to be knowledgeable about when to be outside the box...because not for nothing if one study comes out that shows 9 capsule a day for some brand...that's what would be the recommended dosage on the label -and only then. =====
Guest guest
Lori. the Nordic Natural Pro EFA is the exact same thing you can buy at some health food stores which Nordic naturals named differently for them,Omega 369. (Nordic Natural Pro EFA, Nordic Natural 369--same thing) Nordic Natural fish oil is a very high quality fish oil. The Omega 369(or Pro EFA)is what you really want to use instead of the cod liver oil because of the omega 3, and 6 which seem to be at the right proprtions that work for some of our apraxic children to support surges in speech(and in my daughters case and I'm sure others, gross motor surges). I startred my daughter a 2 years old(she is 6 now)and many ,many others start very young. I don't Know why they have 5 and over--Probably what they have done studies on,but it is not harmful-in fact it's good, but if you have concerns ask your pediatrician. The gel capsules are great. I got myndaughter right at 2yo to just chew the capsule because when I poked a hole in it to squeeze it out some would dribble down her chin and she wouold smell like a dolphin all day. She likes the taste, she chews it then spits out the capsule part. I keep them refrigerated because when not, the oil sometimes squirts out of her mouth because it's so squishy--but for travel we don't and usually it's fine. It's usually recommended to start with 1 369 capsule. Wait for a month or so for a plateau in change or progress, then add 1 more. After a few months or another plateau in progresws you can add a PRO EFA nordic natural capsule. Good luck--enjoy your travels! Cheryl > > I have my 2.5 year old son on Nordic Naturals Cod Liver Oil. Guest guest
Hello, I started my son (who is now 25months) on the Nordic Natural fish oils when he was ~22months old. I also had concerns about the " 5 year old " age put on the bottle, so I spoke to my son's pediatrician about it. He said there would be no harm in giving it to him. He did recommend that I start with 1 ProEFA capsule and then work my way up. My son is currently taking the amount recommended by the group - 2 ProEFA capsules and 1 ProEPA capsule per day.) I hope this give you some reassurance! IL Lori. the Nordic Natural Pro EFA is the exact same thing you can buy at some health food stores which Nordic naturals named differently for them,Omega 369. Guest guest
I was told the five year age was b/c the capsules could be a choking hazard, not because the fish oil was inappropriate. I just watch him chew it up and swallow and he drinks juice or water afterward. Otherwise, he has fishy cat breath. I give my son alot less then this. Is it 2 ProEFA and 1 ProEPA for all ages? > > > > I have my 2.5 year old son on Nordic Naturals Cod Liver Oil.
