MEDFORD, Ore. - Anti-bullying messages are spreading across the country, as the

issue becomes a central focus of national media.

A study released this week finds that 50-percent of high school students say

they have bullied, teased or taunted someone else in the past year, and 47

percent say they themselves have been bullied, according to 'Ethics of American

Youth'. The study, conducted by the non-profit phson Institute of Ethics,

surveyed more than 40,000 students.

Southern Oregon educators say they cannot take action against bullying unless

people come forward and let them know what is going on. However, they say many

bulling victims are fearful of getting bullied even more for being a tattletale.

This week, the Department of Education is sending letters to schools warning

educators they could be held accountable for bullying in hallways and

classrooms. The Medford School District says it has yet to receive the letter.

The Medford School District say it has zero tolerance for bullying. However, it

says part of the accountability falls on parents' shoulders, who they say need

to teach young people how to be respectful at home.
