My son was recently diagnosed with AS, he also hates school. He is being

held back for the upcoming school year. I am not familiar at with hardly any of

this. What should be put in his IEP for the next school year. I know his dr

said to be sure to put protection from be bullied, and his assignments be

broke down to smaller sections, any suggestions for what else to put in the IEP

would be most helpful.

Thanks Tammy

Pam,

It sounds like some consistent counseling with a family psychotherapist would

do you and Lucas, both, some good. He would have a safe place to vent and you

would get some behavior modification techniques to use. I suggest a smaller

classroom for Lucas, or some time out, alone, with the special ed teacher. What

is on his I. E.P. Try to get some one on one attention, from one of the

speciality teachers, written into his I. E. P.

figure out the best for Lucas for next year. No one is really able

to give me an answer. I really think nobody knows exactly where

Lucas will do best.

He currently is receiving home instruction. His whole year has been

one big change. Started school year at parochial school, switched to

public school, then qualified for gifted program (switched to that

class), was having difficulty. With difficulty I mean he had daily

meltdowns, leaving class, shutting down and getting very angry. He

would display aggressiveness-throwing items, breaking pencils, has

even kicked other kids. called teachers names, he also attempted to

leave the building on several occasions resulting in being

restrained. He then received home tutoring for a few months. Jan-

March. Went back to school in April but only lasted 1 week. Is now

finishing out the school year with home instruction. He is very

bored, I know he is missing out on a lot of stuff that they are doing

in the classroom. This is a kid who loves school. Has been moody,

even seems to be getting very angry again. Has also had a med

change, started Risperdal but just stopped because of side effects.

What a mess.

At our last meeting, we discussed options for possible change of

placement. My husband and I have visited all the places that were

suggested to us as well as others. In my heart, I don't feel any of

these are the best for Lucas. I know he has behavior issues, but I

am having difficulty placing him in a place where there really isn't

appropriate peer interaction. The places recommended are for kids

with severe emotional disturbances and socialization outside of

school is not recommended. What I really feel Lucas needs is a few

friends that understand him and tolerate his outbursts. He does have

one friend who accepts him for who he is. Yes, he really does need

to continue to work on his anger management! but he has made nice

progress in his social skills group!!

I know I am asking alot. Just would like some direction. A friend of

ours who is a special ed teacher, recommended that Lucas be placed in

the ED classroom with inclusion into the regular or gifted class for

academics. This would allow him to return to his neighborhood

school. We have had several plans regarding behavior, but I really

feel that it wasn't given enough time. They just didn't know how to

handle Lucas, we don't either sometimes. I love the comment, you know

we never have had a kid like Lucas! Lucas needs time and instruction

in using the plan. Really needed time to work through what worked

and didn't work. Has shown some carryover in strategies but not much

success. Just seems to get very angry. You can see the rage coming

on. Played baseball yesterday, but not a good day. Was very angry

at the calls. Was very vocal and became upset. I was happy that he

didn't have a meltdown on the field and didn't become physically

aggressive. That was progress, he just go angry and yelled. Had

clenched fists the whole time.

Sorry I am so wordy, guess I just needed to vent. Any suggestion

would be greatly appreciated. Constructive criticims accepted!!

Thanks,

Pam Denzler

Just out of curiosity, where are you located? This sounds much like

what I have been going through with . (Including the behavior

plans which were developed but not given enough time to judge their

effectiveness) is also currently on home instruction, we have

been searching for years for the right placement for her, but the

schools that can handle her behavior can't challenge her academically.

Not to mention the fact that most of these schools are for ED students.

(Read " The Perfect Misplacement " http://www.aspennj.org/klin.html)

My suggestion would be to push for a 1 to 1 'aide'. Not an untrained

aide, mind you, but something more along the lines of a teaching

assistant. This person should be willing to learn about your son and

what his triggers are. If Lucas is anything like is, there is

plenty of warning before he enters the meltdown phase. Since the

teachers are too busy keeping track of the other kids, having someone

dedicated to Lucas (and ONLY Lucas - said assistant should not be tapped

to cover while the teacher is out of the classroom) will help nip any

problems in the bud.

Since you say that Lucas likes school, I suspect that he is relatively

young. doesn't like school. She likes to learn, but she doesn't

like dealing with people. I don't blame her, though. She has had many

problems/placements in her 10 years of formal education.

Thanks for your input. Lucas does attend weekly counseling

sessions. My husband or I or both attend with him. He often does

not provide a lot in the way of conversations. Answers yes/no

questions with head nods most of the times. Will tune everybody out

by putting head down and ignoring you. He does seem to be hearing

every word that you are saying. Most of the conversation lately has

been around school etc. Not a fun topic so Lucas isn't very happy.

We had talked about a 1:1 aide for him but he was being very

resistant. He may be more receptive to the idea if if means there is

a chance that he can return to school. When he was at school, he did

spend time with the Special Ed. teacher for brief time in the morning

to get him started, let him know the daily schedule and any changes

that were to occur. For the most part, he was in the regular ed

schedule for the day with little support. Did have a hall pass to

use to go to a " quiet space " which was in the principal's office. It

would work at times, also was using a pass to use the restroom to try

to pull it all back together. Even though he was trying it seemed

that wherever he went was too noisy and did not provide him with the

quiet space that he needed.

Pat,

I think you are very correct when you say that your daughter likes to

learn, doesn't like school. I am not sure if Lucas really likes

school, or it is the only way he thinks of school right now. He

really feels that school is in a building away from home. But he has

said that he feels more comfortable at home. Just misses his

classmates. (that interaction that goes on and the ability to be

challenged.) I also feel like you, that the places we have checked

will not challenge him academically which has always caused problems

as well.

Is receiving home instruction. or are you strictly

homeschooling her. We have had many issues with communication

between the school teacher who is in charge of the assignments and

providing the home tutor with all the information. Our home

tutor/teacher does a wonderful job with Lucas, giving him space when

needed. The problem has been, when given assigments, Lucas is not

always sure who's directions he is going to follow. Too many people

involved. Between the school teacher, home instructor. mom and dad

that is way too many people for Lucas to handle.

We are located in Ohio

schools

HI Everyone

I know that its that time of year again when those of us with school age

children have to plan for Sept., on our own and for the CSE meeting. I

wanted to share with you a placement that my daughter was in for 2 years

that I thought was wonderful. My daughter Kate is now 9. She is global

apraxic. She began getting lanquage at about the first grade level...very

slowly. Our disctric allowed us to look for a program 2yrs ago. We saw

many but as you know our population is rare and finding an appropriate

program is hard. We enrolled Kate in a Southern Boces (yes boces) program

called communication development. The placement was in one of the Armonk elem

schools, It was for kids with lanquage and verbal disabilities. The best

part of the program is that the classroom teacher and speech pathologists

are both extremely knowlegable of apraxia, the disability as well as the

ability of our children to learn. They new just how to work with Kate and

her progress over the past two years has been amazing.

I wanted to let any of you considering an out of district placement for your

child in Sept to take a look. I would imaginge that it would have to be

arranged through your disricts contacts and your childs paperwork work would

have to be recieved before you could observe. I am aware that all our

childrens needs are different and what was wonderful for us may not be what

you are looking for, but I thought i would pass on the name of the program

for anyone who is currently looking.

We are currently on the search for a new program for Kate. I should mention

that this particular program is up to and including 3rd grade only, sadly-

or we would be there forever.

If anyone has a program or school that they could recommend for us I'd

greatly appreciate hearing from you. Also anyone who would like any more

information, pls don't hesitate to contact me.

Best of luck to everyone.

Trish
