Guest guest
I found an omega 3 at vitamin shoppe but so far that's it. I would be curious to hear what you hear from others. My son is 2 1/2 and I am afraid to try anything else. Our pedi scared me away from any gummies ever. Guest guest
I buy Nordic Naturals Complete 3-6-9 & Nordic Naturals EPA at Vitamin Shoppe. I buy them both as capsules. I pierce the capsules w/ a pushpin & squirt the contents into a medicine cup. I then use a syringe (an oral medication syringe) & give it to my 7 year old that way. I give him 2 of the 3-6-9, and 1 of the EPA. He is like 45-47 lbs. I think this is right as far as I can tell. If I'm wrong feel free to correct me! Hope this helps! Guest guest
Hi Kris I have been using this one for some time now. http://www.mandimart.co.uk/polar-power-wild-sockeye-salmon-oil-8-fl-oz-240-ml-un\ flavoured-345-p.asp I used to syringe it up and give it to my son this way followed by a little treat (as it tastes yuck) but now he takes it off the spoon no treat needed. x From: kristin5705@... Guest guest
As per the information I have received here, I give my 2 1/2 year old the Nordic Naturals (3-6-9) in capsule form. I just pierce the capsule with a needle and squeeze the oil out. It has a lemon flavor and doesn't taste that bad. They are easy to travel with this way too. e have to bring them with us because I wouldn't want to miss a day. > > Please help! > > I have a 27 month old boy with Speech and Gross Motor Delays. Guest guest
I've been giving our apraxic daughter the liquid Omega 3-6-9 since she's been 3 years old, and she's 6 now. I find using a liquid a bit easier than popping open fish capsules (which I've done as well). However, you have to use the liquid more quickly than fish capsules. The only brand I use is Nordic Naturals. You can go directly to their web site and order it from there, or you can order it on Amazon.com Here's the link to the product I've been using and Nordic Naturals is a brand named in the Late Talker book by Dr. Marilyn Agin and Geng. http://nordicnaturals.com/en/Products/Product_Details/98/?ProdID=1435 I've never been able to find it at any health food store near us and have always ordered it online. Hope that helps.

Guest guest
I use the Nordic Naturals Pro EFA which I believe is the same as the Nordic Naturals 3-6-9 that you can buy at the health food store. It is a " soft gel " . My son can't take pills. What I do is use a knife to poke a hole in the gel and then I carefully squeeze the oils out and I mix it into his yogurt. It has a lemon flavor to it, so it doesn't taste bad with fruited yogurt. I know that Nordic Naturals has a " liquid " 3-6-9 junior that he also took. I think we got that one at Vitimin World. > > Please help! > > > > I have a 27 month old boy with Speech and Gross Motor Delays. I > > would like to give him an Omega 3-6-9 in a LIQUID form. Guest guest
Hi..it does exist! I used to give my son it. Nordic Naturals Complete Omega 3-6-9 and Nordic Naturals Junior 3-6-9. They are the same, you just have to give smaller doses of the adult version. Some natural food stores have it, or you can purchase it online. I used to buy it from www.vitacost.com. I even believe
Guest guest
I buy fish oils from the CHERUB site http://www.speech411.com and they do have the liquid proefa. I also buy from Whole Foods when I run out in a pinch but I have found buying online to be cheaper by a few dollars as I get 90 capsules for about the same price as 60 at the store. I use capsules because we don't use much each day and I read the capsules last for years and the liquid once opened only is fresh for a few months. I use a pin on the one end of the capsule and just squeeze it out. My son would not be able to swallow pills either. Guest guest
Just wanted to add to this that you don't have to squeeze the oil into anything. My 33 month old takes the ProEFA. We just " pop " the capsule with a pin and pop them in his mouth and he chews them up. Squeezing it into something just makes a big mess (in my opinion) and then everything you put it into gets a " stain " ....the oil kind of attaches itself to plastic so if you use medicine cups, droppers etc they end up ruined eventually. ________________________________ From: Carpenter <kristincarpenter@...> Sent: Tue, December 28, 2010 7:28:28 PM Subject: Re: [ ] Liquid Form Omega 3-6-9 for a 2 year old, does it exist? Guest guest
The simplest and cleanest way, if you can get away with it, is to just have the kids chew up the soft-gels. I have been using the kids sized soft-gels (Children's DHA and Omega 3-6-9 junior) with my six year old son and 4 year old daughter. They are happy to chew up the children's sized soft-gels, which have thinner shells and contain about half of the adult doses. They seem to like popping them in their back teeth, much like they like popping bubble wrap. Feeding them an equivalent dosage with the kid-sized gels is more expensive, but I was desperate to find a reliable way to get it into them. They have been doing this for several years now. No more spilled fish oil that will eventually stink. I also recently ran out of the Omega 3-6-9 junior, and had them chew up the adult version, Complete Omega 3-6-9. I told them they could spit out the shells after chewing them flat, and they are quite happy to do this. I'm just glad that I found a way to get the fish oils into them, after messing around with trying to blend this into applesauce, ice cream, etc when we first started. I also give them a pleasantly flavored gummy-vite multivitamin after the fish oil, in an attempt to reduce any lingering after-taste. It's like the dessert vitamin. Note that the Omega's are very healthy and generally recommended for all children, as long as you get a brand (Like Nordic Naturals) that is not going to contain any impurities. If you child is willing to take these I would continue to provide them even if you do not see any noticeable effects. My daughter is neurotypical, and takes these every day with her brother. -jimk On 12/30/2010 7:06 AM, Sullivan wrote: > > Just wanted to add to this that you don't have to squeeze the oil into > anything. Guest guest
This is just my opinion, but I wouldn't advise anyone to have their child chew on fish oil capsules. Too much of a choking risk. Much easier and safer to buy new syringes or medicine cups. Guest guest
I use Nordic Naturals Complete 3-6-9 liquid (Also known as ProEFA in capsule form). Here's the link to their site: http://www.nordicnaturals.com/en/Products/Product_Details/98/?ProdID=1435 I always use liquids at home because it's so much cheaper, but always have a bottle capsules around for when I'm out for the day. 1 capsule = 1 ml, so I use a kid's medicine cup (comes with every liquid cough syrup) to pour the liquid into, then add EPA capsules. I personally give my son (almost 5) 4 EFA/ 2 EPA - I'm not sure if this is a lot, but when I raised it to that amount a few months ago, he spontaneously gained 3 sounds in a matter of days ('Q', 'J', and one other). I order from http://www.speech411.com - the prices are the same or slightly lower than other sites, and a portion of the proceeds goes to apraxia. In fact, seeing this reminded me to go there now to order. > > Please help! > > I have a 27 month old boy with Speech and Gross Motor Delays. I would like to give him an Omega 3-6-9 in a LIQUID form. Guest guest
Just one more thing, many apraxic children have oral apraxia as well. This does mean there can be difficulty with any on command activity which requires mouth and tongue movement as well as swallowing difficulties. I'm pleased you found a way to get the fish oil in, but I wouldn't advise parents with kids with oral apraxia to try chewing fish capsules, no matter what size. Guest guest
The childrens omega 3-6-9 is exacly half the dosage of the adult capsule for both DHA and EPA. The Childrens DHA has about 1/3 of the DHA in the adult capsule ( 125 Mg vs 450 ) but almost the same amount of EPA. (82 vs 90) Has Dr Agin ever published any accurate dosage recommendations? I was under the impression that getting the dosages correct was somewhat of a trial and error process. If there is now a formula available based on body weight I would love to see it. -jimk On 1/4/2011 7:26 AM, Carpenter wrote: > > I'd have to check to see if the child size pills contain the correct > ratio and amounts recommended by Dr. Agin. > > Sent from my iPhone > > On Dec 31, 2010, at 11:20 AM, Jim Kavitsky <jkavitsky@... > <mailto:jkavitsky%40charter.net>> wrote: > > > Have you seen the child size capsules? Guest guest
Agreed, but children with oral apraxia can vary widely in their degree of impairment. I would be surprised if any of them who were chewing solid foods well had any trouble with the smaller capsules. If they are having trouble chewing solid food then the liquid would be a better delivery method. -jimk On 1/4/2011 7:35 AM, Carpenter wrote: > > Just one more thing, many apraxic children have oral apraxia as well. > This does mean there can be difficulty with any on command activity > which requires mouth and tongue movement as well as swallowing > difficulties. Guest guest
I know there must be lots of new members here so let me clarify something about fish oil dosages which any one of us can do as lay people. No doctor anywhere in the world right now can tell you the correct dosage of fish oils as there are no set dosages for children. When there is research with a specific formula and dosage than that dosage and amount will be placed on the bottle -and typically those dosages will be way higher than what most average people will feel comfortable with without someone (like a doctor) telling them it's OK. However -there could be numerous studies and each could use a slightly different formula and dosage and each one could then make claims to be an appropriate dosage once demonstrated in valid and accepted published clinical studies. Without any studies companies are ONLY allowed to put the absolute minimum dosage of " one to two capsules a day " on a bottle as " serving suggestion " A good example would be the formula that introduced me to fish oils and speech for my son Tanner -Efalex. At the time I bought it at a Rite Aid in NYC back in 1999 it was manufactured by a company from the UK called Enfamil and was highly respected as it was formulated, and validated in research by Dr. Jackie Stordy -co author of the book The LCP Solution along with Malcolm Nicholl who along with Dr. Agin, Malcolm is one of our co authors of The Late Talker book (and we have a chapter devoted to fish oils as many of you know) Who came up with dosage and formula for this group? Me. There will be nobody that will debate that because I learned which formula was the best through trial and error and after over ten years now as a parent who used them to help her own children I learned that not all formulas were the same. I learned how to mix different brands together- and learned that more is not always better but at the same time (and I'm bolding this for point not yelling) THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS FISH OILS FOR KIDS I shared what I found with doctors including Dr. Agin and this group and at a conference for this very topic that I helped host http://www.cherab.org/news/scientific.html and then in the book The Late Talker. Fish oils marketed to kids is just that -marketing. Fish oils are fish oils and I won't stop any one of you that is nervous about fish oils to start with the Jr and pay twice as much for the little capsules....but...most of us don't give our children capsules to swallow -we pierce them with a pin and squeeze them out...and most people that use the Jr use 2 which is exactly equal to one regular ProEFA. To me the only thing good about the Jr capsules is they are great when you want to teach a child how to swallow capsules -but other than that because you get (with the proEFA Jr line) the same 90 capsules for about the same price as the regular and they are an exact half dosage...you are paying about twice as much -and I'm not even good at math. I have a long history of being ridiculed, laughed at and put down for my fight to get fish oils out there. I too recommend to check with your child's doctor -but I'm here to tell you that fish oils are essential fatty acids- which means they are needed by the body daily, the body can't produce them so need to consume them and they are virtually lacking in our diets today. We live today in a warped world where nobody questions the amount of french fry, pizza or doughnut oil a child gets into their body -but fish oil...something needed and healthy??? That's scary to people. Not all people but people that are under the spell that if it doesn't come with a prescription or wrapped in a fast food wrapper you have to research any possible side effects. Yes that's great -but please don't stop at researching healthy essential nutrients -research what is prescribed -research fast and junk foods too. As a parent in this group -YOU will learn what the best possible dosage is for your child like we all did -by trial and error- until there is research which we are raising monies for through http://www.pursuitofresearch.org I am not able to put all the details in writing as I was asked specifically not to put anything in writing but if there is anyone that wants to donate toward the 250 thousand dollars we are raising I will be more than happy to get you all the facts....and you won't get more impressive and I can state for a fact once this research is done...it will be DONE and accepted globally. Listen -no disrespect to any medical or research doctors on this list...but after all the years of dealing with fish oils my opinion is that as a parent that uses it first hand...we will know the best formula better than one that just has theory. Many doctors will recommend for example cod liver oil...well I digress but no that is not the formula I would at all recommend to most. My advice for fish oils is check with your child's doctor if you can use fish oils at all...why? Because if they say no and don't have a good reason like your child is allergic or has some rare disorder where he or she can't digest any type of oil " I " would switch doctors. Start with one capsule of ProEFA instead of buying liquid and " saving " money and using a teaspoon which is like 4 capsules of ProEFA...the dosage I found best is 2 ProEFA to 1 ProEPA. I have an article on fish oils here http://pursuitofresearch.org/2010/12/01/therapeutic-use-of-fish-oil-for-apraxia-\ autism-and-other-communication-impairments/ =====
Guest guest
Wow left off the most important example. Efalex which I write about below -Dr. Stordy's formula used and validated in research for children which used to be made in the UK...the dosage used in research was 2 to 3 capsules- 2 to 3 times a day back when I used it. I had a 3 year old and was going through a bottle a week- and it was expensive! Then when I switched to ProEFA (after speaking with the owner of Nordic naturals wife about why Efalex was so much better and worked while their DHA Jr/cod liver oil cute strawberry caps didn't and started questioning the primrose oil and the different formula and they came up with " their version of Efalex " yes true story) the dosage on the Nordic naturals bottle said at that time " one capsule once a day " and while I didn't want to switch Tanner to ProEFA to try when we did our nonprofit parental anecdotal feedback because every time I switched Tanner off Efalex he regressed...I thought " wow I'll save lots of money if I only need one a day " because like most of you I just believed that if they put it on the bottle than THEY know!!! (no -they don't again unless there is research and even if they do are not allowed to say more than one to two capsules a day) Well Tanner surges on the one capsule of ProEFA a day over the 6 capsules a day of EFalex -my husband and I were both thrilled and amazed. If you listen to Tanner recite the 3 little piggies on this page this is right when he switched to a LOWER dosage of fish oils -but a different formula-ProEFA... http://www.debtsmart.net/talk/tanner.html and he also learned to say the sound " k " and " j " for the first time which we had been working on forever. My sister was no longer DooDoo (ha- that is what Tanner called my sister, his Aunt , for years) By the way -Efalex is no longer made by the high quality company that once made it. Was bought by a different company -don't want to say which but was sold for a bit in GNC and one PUFA research doctor told me that once it was bought that she " wouldn't feed it to my dog " Not the reason I don't recommend it -it's because I saw better results on one capsule of ProEFA over 6 of Efalex...and then reported it here and in our group and just about all have had the same results. Tanner's been pretty par for the course and if any of you even doubt for a minute that NV isn't going to blow you away...you are missing one of the best things ever. I'll even say NV in my opinion appears to be BETTER than fish oils. Really mark my words. http://pursuitofresearch.com/the-history-why-nutriiveda-for-therapeutic-use-for-\ autism-apraxia-etc/ And PSS...LOVE Dr. Stordy and I thank her for Efalex and all it did to get this party started! =====
