Guest guest
Thad even though I'm away from the weekend -I needed to search this because I have my whole family including my children on nutriiveda and as of yet have only heard good things from doctors, nutritionists and feedback from those on it. I mean worst news (like fish oils) would be " it's healthy but it's not " working " ) but this appears to work for even those few fish oils don't work for -so pretty amazing. A normal tuna fish sandwich would contain more selenium than a scoop of nutriiveda Also keep in mind the nutritional info on the label is per two scoops -not sure of your child's age but some are only using one scoop so 35 micrograms which according to the NIH sheet I have the link for below is even safe for an infant. I read more issues about complications from low levels of this essential trace mineral. I did the search for you (thank goodness I'm a search queen!) and here is what I found: Selenium is an essential trace mineral and that's all that's in the nutriiveda is a trace amount. You brought up Solaray which is part of Nutraceutical Corporation -may want to search FDA recall for all their brands. It appears from what I read on this link that Solaray manufactured a few batches with levels that were 300 times higher than what they put on the label which of course could be toxic! (for all products please check FDA to see if your brand has ever been recalled) " The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) testing has found hazardous levels of selenium, up to 200 times greater than the amount stated on the label, in Tropical Orange and Peach Nectar flavors of " Total Body Formula " and Orange/Tangerine flavor of " Total Body Mega Formula. " http://www.bt.cdc.gov/agent/selenium/supplements2008.asp Nutriiveda again is a high quality product formulated by some of the world's most respected doctors- including Dr. Deepak Chopra and Dr. Simon who put their names and reputations behind nutriiveda. I highly again recommend you check this with your child's doctor or any nutritionist you can -not because I think there are any risks -but because the more you check the more you'll learn that nutriiveda is that incredible and " impressive " as they say of a product. It's truly remarkable. I had to drive for a class trip yesterday before we went away for the weekend and the head of Tanner's school has been on the nutriiveda for about 6 weeks now. She had run out about 10 days ago. First I just want to add that Patty is a vegan -very healthy and only on the nutriiveda for nutrients/maintenance as she's in very good health. We were sitting in the movies prior to The Lightning Thief starting and she said " can you please get me more nutriiveda? I ran out and have been meaning to call you and my energy level has gone (she took her hand and went down) " I didn't understand it because I eat so healthy and I'm doing all the same things but my body seems have been doing so much better on the nutriiveda. Do you think you can get me some more right away? " (my one neighbor is dropping some off for her as I'm not home and didn't have any) Also if anyone wants to talk to her about Tanner -she's BLOWN AWAY. Just let me know -this product again has been life changing to not just Tanner either. Here's info on selenium from the NIH -and here's the only mention of children -but I hope doesn't have anything to do with the children in our group: An examination of 125 HIV-positive men and women linked selenium deficiency with a higher rate of death from HIV [60]. In a small study of 24 children with HIV who were observed for five years, those with low selenium levels died at a younger age, which may indicate faster disease progression [61]. Results of research studies have led experts to suggest that selenium status may be a significant predictor of survival for those infected with HIV [62]. # Campa A, Shor-Posner G, Indacoche F, Zhang G, Lai H, Asthana D, GB, Baum MK. Guest guest
, Thanks for responding. I hope my question didn't interrupt your vacation or cause undue stress. After reading your response and trying to figure out where my notion that selenium was bad came from, I think it was a combination of factors. At the time (several years ago), I was looking for vitamin e that had gamma in it. The only one I could find locally was the Solaray Bio e gamma plex (http://www.vitacost.com/Solaray-Bio-E-Gamma-Plex ), which has 200 mcg of selenium. Since the plan was to give high levels of the vitamin E, that particular formulation would have given more selenium than I was comfortable with. With some more searching (I've been on the NV for a few days now, so maybe I'm " more focused " too :-) I found a chart of upper limits for selenium: http://lpi.oregonstate.edu/infocenter/minerals/selenium/ Tolerable Upper Intake Level (UL) for Selenium Age Group UL (mcg/day) Infants 0-6 months 45 Infants 6-12 months 60 Children 1-3 years 90 Children 4-8 years 150 Children 9-13 years 280 Adolescents 14-18 years 400 Adults 19 years and older 400 Thanks for reminding me that the nutrition info on the Nutriiveda is for two scoops, I hadn't factored that in. My son is 10 yrs old, so even at four scoops, I don't think there'd be an issue. I started him on it yesterday, with only one scoop. Mostly just to give us a chance to figure out a way that he likes it. He wasn't too keen on it, but I cajoled him into it eventually. One thing that seemed to help, was letting him drink it through a straw. I don't know if it was the texture of the drink on the lips or what, but the straw seemed to help. This morning I mixed mine with Hawaii's Own Paradise Punch (http://www.hawaiisown.com/products ) and a few spoons of sugar. It was pretty close to a drink you'd get at an Orange Julius (http://www.orangejulius.com/ ), if anyone has ever had one of those. Anyway, thanks again for responding and I hope you have (or 'had' depending on when you see this) a great Vacation.
