Guest guest
Hi everyone. I am new to this group. I am glad I found it. I have a 6 year old son who has apraxia, development delays. ly, his diagnosis for school is speech delay and development delay. Private sector uses the lingo which states apraxia but in terms that the insurance company accepts. I think there may be other things going on with but suffice it to say, he has a severe speech impairment. My 3 year old daughter can speech far better than he. Although, I will say, his speech has improved...more words...more approximate words...more 3-4 word utterances. He " speaks " all the time, you just cannot understand him We understand him the best because we know him...we can play the 50 questions dialogue, read his body language, and put what he says into context to understand him. He currently is receiving 120 minutes per week in school. He has written in his IEP for his minutes to be 50% 1:1 and 50% group. That was a victory last school year. Now, new school, we are being told that they do not designate their minutes 1:1, group. They just write their minutes and then allow the team the flexibility they need to deliver the minutes. From everything that I am reading about Apraxia, it seems to me that he needs individual minutes far more than group minutes. Is that correct? Also, they say he needs group minutes to help with his behavior issues. yes, he has behavior issues which I believe are far greater than he just is obstinate (an adjective being applied to him this year). I think he may actual have executive functioning issues. Question: without reading all the messages, I am not certain if this has been addressed already. Sorry if it already has. How many minutes is appropriate for a child with Apraxia? How should these minutes be delivered? Another tidbit: I take him to private speech therapy, 45 minutes per week. He is pulled out of school for this therapy. Sorry to rattle on...I am frustrated with group minutes (sharing this time with 7 other students) and the possibility that individual minutes will not be written into his IEP. Not certain if I have a leg to stand on with this stuff. I look forward to participating in this group, getting to know you, learning from you, and sharing what I know. Thanks. -Deanna-
