Guest guest
Hi,   We live about 50 miles west of St. Louis and can share our experience. First Steps is the states early intervention program, providing services for birth to 3. I found it very hard to qualify for speech services as they evaluate your child in all areas. So if no other issues than speech, child's speech must be functioning at less than half their age to qualify. (i.e. with my son at 16mo. he had no motor, physical issues, but was not making any sounds. Did not qualify, as they compared to 8mo. old) There is a free clinic for children with speech and language disorders called the ish Rite Clinic. They will provide services for ages 2-6, and evaluation is speech based only.  We just started with them last month, but am encouraged with staff so far. Most therapy providers will tell you they will not submit to insurance, but can provide statements for you to try to obtain reimbursment.  (this was my experience with both private and hospital based therapy programs). Not aware of any preschool that specializes in treating speech, but in our school district, the public school will be responsible for providing services at age 3, and if enrolled in preschool full time, they will visit that preschool. Have used a couple private SLP's while waiting for son to qualify with clinic, can pass along names if you would like. Feel free to email me. Angel From: Tina Wawzysko <t_wawzysko@...> Subject: [ ] Anyone from St. Louis area? Questions.. Date: Monday, March 22, 2010, 10:18 PM  Hi, I was wanting to see if there is anyone on here from the St. Louis area? It is possible that we might be moving there (we currently live in Kansas). I am just wanting to see how things run there in regards to our kids who need speech therapy. I have two boys, one with apraxia and is in preschool thru the school district here and one with suspected apraxia who is 2 1/2. If anyone can help me out on these questions I have, I would really appreciate it!  1. Is there a state early intervention program for kids under the age of 3? 2. Is there a preschool program for kids who qualify? Have your kids with Apraxia or speech delays qualified for these programs? And what is your experience with school speech therapists? How often is the preschool and for hour many hours a day? If my son is in school thru the school district here, would he just be transfered into one there or would he have to get evaulated again? 3. Are there other speech related preschools? 4. Where are the best places to go for speech therapy and any SLP's you would recommend? What is the typical cost for a therapy session and is financial aid typically available? 5. Is there any state laws that help in regards to insurance coverage for speech therapy?  I would really appreciate any helpful information that you have! I am not wanting to move and change everything that is working so well right now but we may have too. Hope to hear from someone soon and thanks so much!! Tina  From: sandy lehmann <mommie2chris@ .ca> Subject: [childrensapraxiane t] Re: so frustrated! Nutriveda... need help! @groups. com Date: Monday, March 22, 2010, 1:01 PM  also frustrated here. but am making some progress in getting NV into my son. I have now, very very slowly been swapping hot chocolate mix for the NV. i started really slow, only adding a small amount in hot(warm)chocolate. For the last 2 days i've been putting only 1 tsp hot choc. mix in the cup with hot water, add lots of milk so it's warm, then added the nutriveda. I was having problems because it didn't mix very well. Well, yesterday i went to Ikea and they sell these mini drink mixers. they are probably for mixing drinks with alcohol, but works amazing with the nutriveda and it only cost 9 dollars! He seems fine with the drink now, comparing that to not drinking it at all before. I am still having trouble getting him to drink water during the day. My son seems to be part camel, so doesn't like to drink anything. That's where my frustration is coming in now. Tried talking to him about it, tried rewarding him for drinking water......nothing. I haven't been noticing any difference from just doing the fish oils to doing the NV. I'm getting depressed about it. Teachers have noticed nothing either (i never told them about it) So, long story. just start with regular chocolate milk with a teaspoon or less and SLOWLY build from there. hth sandy

Guest guest
Hi - I am not from St. Louis. I live in Southern IL, but my son is a patient of Dr. Twymann. She is a dev. ped at Cardinal Glennon in St. Louis. She is an amazing doctor and her staff is great. The SLP she works with is always available by phone to answer any questions. She does have an 8 month waiting list and you will have to have a referral to see her. We drive almost 3 hours one way to see her. We saw another doctor at St. Louis Children's Hospital first and she misdiagnosed my son with autism. Her name is Dr. Garriga. I have met other parents that have not been happy with her either. Thought that might help. Sorry I don't have any answers for the rest of your questions.
