Guest guest
Have you read 's bk, The Late Talker? Read Ch 2 & 3, esp pg. 36-37. Does your son seem to fit those criteria? I don't know any SLPs in Canada. In my private practice, we perform many evaluations for clients who come to us from out of state. We are located in land (East Coast/mid atlantic). We are trained in PROMPT, Beckman, structured Talk Tools hierarchies, much more. Visit www.helpmespeak.com for more info. Let me know how we can help. Warmest wishes, Barbara A , M.S., CCC-SLP Executive Director, Help Me Speak, LLC 410-442-9791 [ ] Frustrated - 4 year old not yet diagnosed Hello everyone, I am very frustrated at trying to get an accurate diagnosis for my 4 year old non-verbal son. We currently reside in Alberta Canada. He was labelled at 18 months as being Globally Delayed, meaning delayed in all areas. There has also been an ongoing query of Autism and his last SLP mentioned she thought he showed signs of Verbal Apraxia. His SLP at his Early Ed school isn't even all that familiar with Apraxia nor could she give me a name of a recommended SLP that could assess him. The developmental pediatrician that assessed him at 18 months states it should be an SLP that makes a diagnosis of Apraxia or Dysarthia. I too find here, the SLPs are not on board with an Oral Motor type of program..so very frustrating! I am looking for advice as to how do you know if its Apraxia/Dysarthia? He is also significantly cognitively delayed so doesn't understand simple requests. He babbles but no words, he usually has an open mouth stance, drools and cannot blow bubbles (but does blow a recorder) or form lips to make kissing. Anyones help/input is appreciated. Thanks
Guest guest
Hi I am not sure how much help I can be to you other than to say that I sympathise with what you are experiencing. I have a 7 year old with Autism and Verbal Apraxia and it is a hard road. Trying to get help for the apraxia is almost impossible for us here in our part of Australia. There is just not the knowledge about it and the school only want to help him with the autism related communication difficulties. It is very frustrating. We have found so far that we are our son's best speech coaches and try to help him during his daily living routines as he just doesn't really have the stamina for full-length speech consultations. We have been getting a private speech therapist with 'some' apraxia experience to visit him once a week at school and that is helping but I think with apraxia we are in for a long journey. You may also wish to consider augmentative communication devices at some point for your child to reduce their frustration levels. That definitely helps! We began with PECS and now use a combination of Makaton signing, a whiteboard and an i-pod touch (upon which we have the proloquo2go application on). All of these make a big difference to our son's ability to communicate, however, nothing is perfect. I wish you well on your journey and hope that you can find some suitable assistance in your part of the world. Please know that there are lots of others going through similar struggles for their children. Stay strong! Guest guest
Hi, I don't know where abouts you are in alberta, but you can try finding SLPs by area on the website for canadian professional speech and language. www.caslpa.ca you can find an slp by area and it also tells you their specialties.  Just for alberta alone, there are 10 pages of professionals. I'm in ontario, and our doctor just agreed with the slp that he had severe apraxia and was able to include it in his report for us. hth sandy ________________________________ From: luv4reidster <luv4reidster@...> Sent: Tue, March 23, 2010 4:14:13 PM Subject: [ ] Frustrated - 4 year old not yet diagnosed  Hello everyone, I am very frustrated at trying to get an accurate diagnosis for my 4 year old non-verbal son.
