Guest guest
Hello everyone, I am very frustrated at trying to get an accurate diagnosis for my 4 year old non-verbal son. We currently reside in Alberta Canada. He was labelled at 18 months as being Globally Delayed, meaning delayed in all areas. There has also been an ongoing query of Autism and his last SLP mentioned she thought he showed signs of Verbal Apraxia. His SLP at his Early Ed school isn't even all that familiar with Apraxia nor could she give me a name of a recommended SLP that could assess him. The developmental pediatrician that assessed him at 18 months states it should be an SLP that makes a diagnosis of Apraxia or Dysarthia. I too find here, the SLPs are not on board with an Oral Motor type of program..so very frustrating! I am looking for advice as to how do you know if its Apraxia/Dysarthia? He is also significantly cognitively delayed so doesn't understand simple requests. He babbles but no words, he usually has an open mouth stance, drools and cannot blow bubbles (but does blow a recorder) or form lips to make kissing. Anyones help/input is appreciated.
