Guest guest
I was on the phone with a number of parents from an autism support group today. Amazed with the results not only shared at http://pursuitofresearch.org/testimonials.html -but in their own group with parents of older autistic children they know, the question as always turned to " why? " One parent brought up the new book " The Genius in All of Us: Why Everything You've Been Told About Genetics, Talent, and IQ Is Wrong " as a possible explanation why we are seeing such dramatic surges across the board not just in preschool children, but in our children that are now teens and young adults most within just days on nutriiveda. As Shenk, the author of this book states, " Intelligence isn't general. Intelligence is not a thing. Instead, intelligence is a dynamic, diffuse, and ongoing process. " This book came at a perfect time just when we are addressing an SLP who expresses her personal opinion about a 3 year old's cognitive ability; against the child's high test results. As another SLP pointed out it's not an SLP's place to state the child only scored high because the tests were " too easy " What's even more concerning to me is the parent who clearly stood up for her child to this SLP initially stating proudly how high her daughter scored on cognitive tests clearly lost belief in her child and stated here in our group that her 3 year old speech impaired child " can't " learn colors. It's the Rosenthal theory of preconceived notion strongly influencing future success. Dr. Rosenthal did not test his well proven theory in the negative for ethical reasons -and yet life does each day with the verbal disabled. An adult even with a mild articulation impairment is judged to have some sort of cognitive issue in most cases. We as parents and professionals who know better need to break this negative cycle of prejudice. From what I've heard and seen without reading the book yet (I just ordered it online) this book shows once again the power within each of us and the importance for belief in ourselves and our children to provide the best possible prognosis. One does not have to talk in order to know how to think...or have feelings when others judge them in a poor light...especially those that they love. Here is some info about this book: From the author's website: " Is true greatness obtainable from everyday means and everyday genes? Conventional wisdom says no, that a lucky few are simply born with certain gifts while most are not; that talent and high intelligence are somewhat scarce gems, scattered throughout the human gene pool; that the best we can do is to locate and polish these rare gems— and accept the limitations and mediocrity built into the rest of us. The new science of human potential suggests otherwise. Forget everything you think you know about genes, talent, and intelligence, and take a look at the amazing new evidence. " http://geniusblog.davidshenk.com I suggest many of us read the book and if it shares the same belief -we start the movement to rebel against the prejudice that too many in society have against the verbal disabled. Just because one can't express themselves at all -or eloquently...does NOT mean they have a processing, receptive, cognitive or learning disability!
