Guest guest
I doubt you'll need to demand anything from your school district. They're perfectly willing to do the testing. The tests you mentioned are pretty standard for kids. As far as IQ testing, it would be done by the school psychologist. Most doctors wont test for IQ till about 6yo. My daughters (9yo) genetics doctor wanted further IQ testing done past what the school had done. We found that Ped Neuro's dont do IQ testing(not the ones I spoke to, which doesnt mean that all wont!!) Dev Ped all said they wont do it either. Again, it doesnt mean that someone somewhere hasnt found one that will--but those are the answers I got. We found that Neuropsychologists are the ones that do the most extensive IQ testing, but they wont see kids younger than 6yo. The ones I spoke to, in NYC, wont take insurance and want to be paid up front. than it was up to me to get reimbursed by the insurance. The genetics doctor said it was ok to not go that route. So we let the school do the testing. Just wondering why? has someone questioned your childs receptive abilities? I'd say wait at least a year and let the school do the initial testing. IF theres still questions, work on the specialists. THe Pediatric Neuropsychologist said the testing is at least 5 hours, which is why it cant accuratetly be measured till they're of school age (K-12). I'd also suggest a lot of reading to your child! Lots of books on different people doing different things. Point out things people are doing. Discovery Books are great for that. The school psychologist will have a flip book and ask " What is drinking? " . He has to point to someone actively drinking from a cup, not a person holding a cup or a picture of a cup. Those are the scenarios they use to test kids. Its a flip-book program of things and people in certain actions and activities. So the older they are, the better and more accurate the results will be. Give it at least a year and read a lot of kids books to him! Guest guest
For kids with apraxia, I use: VMPAC & /or KSPT (Kaufman Speech Praxis Test) & Goldman Fristoe Test of Articulation 2 (GFTA2) & my own oral motor/eating analysis I select each test based on the child's needs, strengths, age, and anticipated level of cooperation with tests. The VMPAC is great but is a long test and it's challenging for young kids. If a child is not yet producing many sounds, I may only use the GFTA2 & analyze the error patterns. If a child is only producing a few sounds, I may only use my o-m/eating analysis. When a child has multiple word approximations but is not yet clear, I use the VMPAC, GFTA2, and my own analysis. Guest guest
Maureen- so bsically I shouldn't PUSH for many huge testing for my 3.5yr old, right? My son's receptive lang is good. Cognition fine.Yes, yes we read all the time. On testing he may not motor plan correctly to point or not want to " work/perform " ..yet he did okay on on very very brief (are the Preschool Scales always brief?) he was 2.75 yr old then. We got Auditory Comp/Expressive Comm/Total Lang Score- that was is. Is there more to this test? Funny that you say you doubt I wont need to " demand " anything from my district, made me laugh...while many districts are doing what needs to be done, some parents have to research and be two steps ahead of their district..kwim? My district may only do the Batelle. The SLP may have his own assessment. I will get details when I call them next week. I have a Preschool Scale that was done last summer, so they consider that satisfactory and may not do another of their own. I also handed them plenty of private evals from private SLPs. SO NOW my question that remains IS: do I have to really worry about how much testing is done right now, for summer/fall FIRST IEP entry for 3/4yr old class? thanks so much for the help!!! > > > > I am wondering WHAT tests are good to have as a baseline standard, and have your children gotten ALL or many of these, which ones? > > > > My son is 3.5yrs old with severe verbal apraxia, (he has been dx many times, so I am not looking for testing to necessarily tell me he has this). Guest guest
Barbara- thank you for this great list of tests! I will ask what testing my district is doing specifically. We had planning meet late last friday, now we all have a week off of school!! so I have to wait till next week to call them. For a 3.5yr old that hardly has many sounds (regressed from 1.5yrs ago) seems I don't need to push for many detailed tests..as long as the SLP has a good starting point...and they will get closer to seeing what to work on, when they actually start working with my son..right? any other advice, all ears..thanks!! Guest guest
If they have told you his receptive is on target, as it is with most apraxia kids, I wouldnt worry about a real iq test for a couple years. If you're in touch with the school district, ask when they'd do it. I meant you wont have to push or demand it because its always part of the evaluation process for coming into the system or a triennial eval.they wont let us say no to the psych part, it goes with any pt, ot or speech eval. At 3yo you would have just some into the system from EI? so if you speak to the school district psychologist they may even give you an idea of a number if thats what you want. my 9yo daughter has severe apraxia and was only signing between 3yo-6yo when she finally began to talk in K. But there was never a question of her receptive, as long as they were doing the non-verbal testing and pointing was ok during the testing. they usually get the psychological testing done in 45 min or have you come back 2 different days.
