Guest guest
congratulations to all the good you are blessed with, and thank you for sharing this about both the NV and the iPad. We started our son at the full dosage on Christmas and the next day when he was opening his stocking he pulled out a lollipop I put in there that was shaped like a tree with frosting on it and when I said it looked good without any hesitation as clear as day he said to me " mom would you like to try it " I had to collect my teeth from the floor I was so shocked, that was my Christmas gift! It's been one thing after another since then, I may need to buy false teeth LOL His teacher and SLP, all of us are shocked at the progress. I will pray that NV helps bring your daughter a voice too. My son loves peanut butter so I am going to try your recipe too, but I keep forgetting to buy sprinkles LOL! I wish we could afford to buy an iPad now because I keep reading the messages about that Do you or others have a family iPad that you let your child use or are people actually buying an iPad just for their child? We may be able to save up for one for the family over time but I don't know how we can afford one for just our child. Suggestions? Kate > > > > you really raise an excellent point about the importance of iPads for not just augmentative communication, but to demonstrate cognitive and receptive ability for a school age 5 and a half years old that is completely 100% nonverbal. I know you homeschool but for those that don't, the iPad could be in today's world an even better way of keeping verbal disabled students from being misclassified and all from being misdiagnosed with cognitive and/or receptive impairments. > > > > In addition to the iPad's help, it's going to be so exciting to hear the NV updates from you as the weeks and months go on as there are so few completely nonverbal 5 year olds in the group to hear about further surges in your daughter in all areas. Hopefully you will be able to get her up to the full dosage -but awesome that you are noting improvements even at half dosage. > > > > And just to clarify here I mixed up 's 5 year old daughter with her 13 year old son when I spoke about the drawing improvement -I'm sure Steph will share when she can -it's all good!! > > > > Congratulations! Guest guest
I loved the lollipop comment! Our iPad is a " family " thing. I was totally spoiled (and shocked) at Xmas to get one. I had been looking getting one on our credit card rewards points but my hubby beat me to the punch. We used our points for a great (and free) get away to Cuba last month. (we live in Canada). This the only perk of my husband traveling so much for business and our points are so easy to redeem with our card. > > > > > > you really raise an excellent point about the importance of iPads for not just augmentative communication, but to demonstrate cognitive and receptive ability for a school age 5 and a half years old that is completely 100% nonverbal. Guest guest
This iPad belongs to her. We pooled money from a few sources to get it for her. She had around $200 that people had given her over the years. Because she is child #5, we didn't really need to buy anything for her so we just saved it. A family member had given us $100 to help with her therapy costs and we still had most of that. And we missed a couple of therapy sessions in November because they fell on Thanksgiving week. Normally, we make those up, but we decided to use the money for the iPad. I have let her brothers download two or three apps for them to play with. She likes to watch them while they play and I'll see her go back and try to play the game by herself later. (But when arguments over the iPad break out, I do remind them that it is hers.) And, I'll admit it, I downloaded Chicktionary for me. I guess it's more fun to watch the boys play their games than to watch Chicktionary because she won't sit and watch me play so I have to wait until she's in bed. :-) Most of the apps we use are free or less than $5, with most being only 99 cents. If you can save up for an iPad, the software end of it is very affordable.
