[ ] Re: ProEPA vs Ultimate Omega

Hi Beth and welcome!

There is actually much research in the area of the PUFAs or EFAs or Omega 3 and

6 oils, or as we refer to much of this " fish oils " that started in England prior

to the US. They are about 5 years ahead of the US in this area- so I don't know

your doctor who assumes the DHA is more important but I'm guessing you live in

the US and for sure he is not a doctor from England. There they have found the

EPA to be more important in dealing with issues such as dyslexia, dyspraxia,

ADHD than the DHA for some reason.

I have the fortunate experience of being able to meet Dr. AJ (who

informed me about the England vs US difference in fish oils where US is still

behind and believes DHA to be more important to the EPA which research in

England proved more important and which we found true in this group for a decade

now in thousands) http://www.fabresearch.org/473 at one of our conferences back

in 2001

http://www.cherabfoundation.org/2001/cherab-foundations-first-apraxia-conference

It's fortunate however your doctor isn't still recommending the CLO or cod liver

oil :) About the formula he is recommending -not only is he focused on the DHA

but it's also void of the GLA or Omega 6 from borage seed oil which we found to

also be important with the Omega 3 in a very small amount for some reason.

I do have a large amount of newbie info on fish oils now here

http://pursuitofresearch.org/2010/12/01/therapeutic-use-of-fish-oil-for-apraxia-\

autism-and-other-communication-impairments/

But after saying that you say on another message just posted that you are

exploring bio medical approaches and that " We are on Carnaware or Carnisone,

Fish Oil for a long time with no improvements. "

Is fish oils and the amino acid carnosine or carn-aware (almost the same thing

except carn-aware has a few other things in it) the only supplements you are

using with your 6 year old nonverbal child? If not what else are you using? If

you are only using those 2 supplements and not seeing any progress I find it

highly doubtful that it will make any difference at all if you switch the

formula of fish oil. Even the wrong formula of fish oils will have subtle

effects on a responder while the " right " formula (which for most is ProEFA) will

have more dramatic effects in positive surges.

And carn-aware or carnosine has come with a mixed bag of effects from nothing to

mild in most to amazing in a handful -but certainly that would not contradict

the fish oils from working from what I've seen. Fish oil therapy does not work

for all sadly -perhaps as much as 80% but not all.

If fish oil therapy does not work I'd highly highly recommend you try NV which

is working in almost all -even for those that fish oils did not work for...and

in addition once you use the NV- try after a few months adding back the fish

oils as the NV appears to help the digestion and utilization of the essential

fats. It appears that much of what we are seeing in today's children and young

adults we represent here are dealing with metabolic issues. So you may want to

share all of this with your child's doctor too because it's being approved all

over as it's providing easily digestible essential nutrition including all of

the essential amino acids and all from food which is the purest form of

supplementation. For sure if you use NV you can stop and should stop

supplementing with carnosine...if the body has all of the essential amino acids

it can produce carnosine if needed.

Here's a page of testimonies most of which are from members right from this

group http://pursuitofresearch.org/products/nutriiveda/nutriiveda-testimonials/

so you can easily be in touch with any of them. In addition there will be a

message coming out shortly from someone named Annie who had surges with NV -but

pulled her child off due to in her words numerous bio medical and other

approaches but at that point the specific carbohydrate diet...and she just put

her child back on NV and is shocked and in tears over the dramatic progress

(which again she did note originally) and feels she " wasted a year " It's so

much easier to believe that success has to be complex and expensive.

I also really want to know what type of therapies and placement your child is in

because the brain responds to multiple stimuli and it's not just bio med or fish

oils or NV alone that can get your child to " normal " and beyond -you need

appropriate therapies. If there is no progress in 3 months then therapy,

therapist or even diagnosis needs to be reexamined. To have a 6 year old child

that is still nonverbal also tells me there is a good chance your child is not

in appropriate placement and probably not receiving appropriate therapies.

Apraxia and autism can be a long road of therapy -but when I started this

journey a bit over a decade ago it was much longer without the fish oils and now

the NV (which seems to have created a paradigm shift in that within 6 months to

a year we are getting reports of the child no longer qualifying for services and

no longer regressing when taken off NV

http://pursuitofresearch.org/2011/01/19/one-year-later-a-possible-cure-through-e\

ssential-nutrition-for-autism-apraxia-etc/ )

But even without anything else- no supplements in any way...and even with a

typical American diet of processed foods which we know lower the IQ

http://pursuitofresearch.org/2011/02/09/you-are-as-smart-as-what-you-eat/ a

child will still progress in therapy if appropriate.

It may take years but you should be noting increases in speech and other skills.

There should be someone that is an outside the school " expert " or " hero " for

your child that can assist in writing and overseeing 3- 6 and yearly goals for

your child and make sure that all goals are appropriate for your daughter and

being met. If the school is not capable of providing appropriate placement and

services there are options including out of district placement.

Just curious...have you read the book I co authored The Late Talker? Because if

not that would probably be your best starting point even prior to jumping into

anything else. Appropriate placement and therapy should be the number one

priority and especially at your daughter's age because she's either already in

kindergarten (I hope not

http://www.facebook.com/topic.php?uid=115029735601 & topic=8863 ) or she'll be

entering next Fall..unless you are homeschooling??

Please share a bit more about your child's therapy and what types she receives,

is it one on one or in group etc.

There is so much hope for a verbal future -but as parents we do need to become

strong advocates for not just appropriate treatments -but appropriate diagnosis,

placement and traditional therapies (OT and ST)

Best,

=====
