Guest guest
Hi, I have used this kit on both my sons (still using with my 2 1/2 year old). When we first started using the cards he had about 25 words, now he has way more than that! When the child is non-verbal it is hard to use them especially if they can't or won't imitate the word after you. My son had a hard time leaarning to imitate the words but I just keep showing them to them saying the word and having him look at them, praising him for just looking at the cards. If he's looking at them, that is a start, eventually I think he will start saying them. Our slp said that by learning alot of the words in the kaufman cards helps strengthen certain mouth muscles cause it gives them a mouth workout and then they will start saying other words as well. Just my opinion, but I would keep seeing the therapist that is doing prompt cause that is a very good therapy technique and do the kaufman cards at home. I would ask your slp what her suggestions are for using them at home though. I am totally a beliver in the kaufman method though it has jump started both of my boys into speaking!! Good luck and let me know if you have any other questions! Tin From: rubykatee <ttaniaa0000@...> Subject: [ ] Kaufman Kit - Can I use this on my own with my child? Date: Wednesday, April 14, 2010, 10:12 PM  Hi, I was thinking of purchasing The Kaufman Speech Praxis Treatment Kit 1 for use with my 25mth old apraxic son. I'm in Australia, and have been unable to find any sp that works with these. Our prompt therapist had a look at them, and said that she believes they would be helpful for my son a little further down the track - he is essentially non verbal at this stage. He has started to use a few word approximations over the last few weeks though (Yay!). I was wondering if it would be appropriate for me to use the kit 'by myself' - ie without the guidance/aid of a sp? And, if you have used the kit, have you found it to be of help to your child? Any input on the subject of this kit would be hugely appreciated. Thanks.
Guest guest
Yes & no. You don't necessarily need the Kaufman cards. What is impt to know is HOW to use the cards. The technique is what is most impt. Basically, it involves allowing and encouraging a child to use an approximation for a word. For ex, first imitating the main vowel in the word (eg a-ee/daddy), then closer & closer approximations of the target word. These suggestions are located on the back of each Kaufman card picture. A child does not HAVE to say each of these word approximations but they are suggestions of easier word shapes than the target word. So, an SLP provides the expertise in knowing HOW to guide a child through approximations, which ones a child may be able to say, when to increase or decrease skills, etc. Usually I will show the parents of my clients how to do this technique with any word. I don't use the K cards as much as I used to because I find many kids w/apraxia have difficulty w/the /n/ sound. Many of the K cards have that sound in them. So if your child is just beginning to make sounds, don't feel the need to rush out & buy these cards. What concerns me is that your SLP doesn't seem to allow your son to make wd approximations, is that correct? Also, I would encourage that SLP to rent training videos from Talk Tools (Sara R ) & incorporate techniques into her therapy. The structured oral motor ex will help build the foundation for emerging speech. Guest guest
I just bought the second kit recently, so I haven't been working at it long, and don't know if my son's interest will wane with time, but right now he really likes working with the cards, and they seem very helpful.
