Guest guest
Why would you put an autistic parent through watching that, we already know what our kids go through, it just upset a terribly upset mom already, lets not bring parents down, we all know what our children's issues are and this just was not needed at this time in my life... please more positive I don't need to know about children not speaking and crying for no reason, I know, I have to put this out of my head now, lets show some positive outcomes, please, the people on this board know you don't need to remind us, I am sorry if I sound upset but I am, it has just been one of those days and seeing that little girl crying, I just shut it off... Guest guest
Thanks so much , that helps me. Jen In a message dated 4/15/2010 7:06:56 P.M. And why would any adult make a child get off the swing just to make that child cry and make a point? Who would ever do that??? Oh why did I say that? Because years ago when I worked in the film industry we worked on a commercial for a light FM radio station. The catch phrase for this commercial was " Lighten up Baby! " and we didn't come up with the catch phrase or what had to be animated for the commercial -we just had to work on what was wanted. It started with 3 crying toddlers (close ups of their faces kind of animated with rotoscoped tears over the actual ones) and then cut to them all happy and playing music with the " Lighten Up Baby " part being said for the station. Thing is it couldn't be filmed that way. In fact had to be filmed exact opposite. Each of the children started off happy, playing, carefree and somehow one by one each baby needed to cry for the end shot. Before I tell you how they got the toddlers to cry I just want to say that I wasn't there, it gave my director nightmares, and she was horrified that the parents were all there and allowed what happened to happen. So to start and I think there were 4 toddlers- each playing a toy musical instrument and laughing having fun. Then they had to get the crying shot. I'll never forget this because I was compared to one of the toddlers Baby one had a cold -all they had to do was touch the baby's nose and he started crying Baby two and three didn't have a cold but for both when they said " Where is your mommy? " a few times as the mothers had agreed to hide behind some pillars in the room -they both started crying when they couldn't see their moms and when their moms didn't answer them when they called out " mommy! " (can you imagine?!!) Baby four is the one compared to me -I wasn't there but was always known as the happy one in the studio. When they tried the same old " where is your mommy? " he just pointed to the pillar his mother was hiding behind and smiled and kept playing. They couldn't figure out how to get his toddler to cry ...until a cameraman recalled something and took over. He went to this baby and said in a very authoritative tone " YOU HAVE TO PLAY THE GUITAR! " as he noticed none of the toddlers wanted the guitar because it was too heavy. This baby just smiled and said " No...no guitar for me " and kept playing. So the cameraman took the guitar again and said again " HERE, YOU HAVE TO PLAY THIS GUITAR " and again the baby just said " No, no guitar for me " but by the third time the happy baby finally broke down and started crying and saying over and over " No guitar for me, no guitar for me, no guitar for me " as he took his hands and rubbe d them over his head. It was horrible- and all for that shot- for that commercial. I'm not saying that this video is a commercial- but if the little girl is not able to speak -and was on the swing happy at the start and end of the video -and (OK perhaps I'm a bit of a skeptic that the pain hit while off the swing and stopped once back on the swing swinging once again.) And speaking of which how do we know it wasn't sensory pain from DSI??? Who here knows for sure what their child was feeling when having a sensory meltdown??? I sure didn't!!! I know when Tanner was little if he was having a sensory meltdown and needed to be on that swing he would scream like he was in PAIN -like someone was sticking pins in him or something...And speaking of which how do we know it wasn't sensory pain from DSI??? Guest guest
My daughter has autism and she was completely non-verbal and we are a huge sucess story now! she had 3 speech teachers and 2 of them have dropped her because she is talking above her age now. Also she is now hyperlectic (loves letters and numbers) she was able to read out loud to me at my level. not a 4 year old but she can read anything. she taught herself and if you really want a nice thing. My daughter has been very sick and you can just imagine I am not going to talk about that right now and today she saw me folding towels and said " what are you doing mom? "  I told her and she said " I can help you. "  And she did. She folded 18 towels. this is no easy feet because she does not have very good hand control because we believe she has autism and rett syndrome. Then we counted the towels and she said 18. . . .9 plus 9 is 18.  I don't know where she learned that but she likes math too. I hold her back a little because she gets mad when she has trouble learning hard things. It was nice to have her be a kid. She helped me with a chore. there was no reward and I did not ask her. she offered. . . . I am such a proud mama today!!!!! Guest guest
Mandi sorry if you misunderstood what I was trying to say. is a parent that is dealing with the same issues (on another message you tell this same parent to be thankful she's not dealing with these issues) and was very hurt by this video, upset it was posted here - and I was trying to point certain things out to her. I'm not saying this child isn't in pain, and I'm not even saying it's not gut pain- I said I have a child that used to scream in pain from sensory integration disorder meltdowns (writing it out for the newbies) and with a nonverbal child you need to try to discover the reason why they are in pain. With my son when he was little none of us ever did understand exactly why he was in pain- and we tried! We did notice trends -he had these meltdowns in public places and relaxed when we left these busy places. But he didn't talk, wasn't able to communicate it as he acted as if he was having pins stuck in him -extreme pain- and today doesn't remember of course. This video to me demonstrated a child that soothed herself by rocking on the swing as that's when she was content at the start and what soothed her at the end -again it just looked like a sensory meltdown to me. And no underestimating how painful that can be to a child too. Clearly a child having a sensory meltdown is in extreme pain. I pointed out a TV commercial I worked on where they had to make the toddlers cry to show that there are different ways to make points -and whether this little girl is crying due to gut pain or sensory pain or because her sister pushed her off the swing there was a point made in the video that you and others feel strongly about. Here's an example to show a baby crying in a funny way -but of course only if the baby actually only cried if the car stopped: I'm also curious who would stand there recording a child crying in extreme pain without saying a word of comfort? (I didn't even realize it until I did hear a woman say something like it's alright toward the very end) To me watching a child crying in pain....alone with no comfort...that's sadder than a child crying in pain with comfort. I'm probably not a good one to show things like this to -I pick things apart too much I guess. But yes -do feel really bad for this little girl for quite a few reasons. =====

Guest guest
I searched for this one commercial on youtube and found it. Even before learning from this group what goes on behind the scenes I never liked that the baby cries http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=urluQHOQIFU & NR=1 Kate
Guest guest
I am well aware of that! Autism to any degree is painful to watch, to live it, to see it.
