Guest guest
Tanita TBF-551 for about $140US. When I started a CRONesque eating plan, I looked far and wide and concluded that you either get one of those or go to Wal-Mart and spend $30 on whatever item they're selling and settle for +/- 2 lbs accuracy and repeatability that isn't. I tried a $80 scale that had great specs, but got it home and it performed no better than the cheapie I had been using. The Tanita is repeatable (my experience) +/- 0.2 lbs and will usually come up with the exact same weight 3 times in a row. The body fat measurement is another story - there you're back to observing multi-day trends. With all of them you need to take measurements at the same time of day with every possible variable in control. I weigh first thing in morning (undressed, after restroom visit, before brushing, nothing eaten or drank, no exertion of any kind, hold tongue in corner of mouth just so, shallow breathing, scale in exact same spot on floor, left foot first, gain balance by temporarily touching window frame, no moisture or debris on bottom of feet, think pleasant thoughts, etc.). And you thought it was science ;-) ----- Original Message ----- From: " pete533 " <pete533@...> < > Sent: Monday, February 18, 2002 9:09 PM Subject: [ ] Nobody has a scale recomendation???????? > Hi, > Let me tell you something about myself. Guest guest
I agree with - I am not sure if I have the exact same model, but I also have a Tanita and it is the ONLY one I have found to give truly repeatable measurements. Guest guest
Hi , we have similar challenges, and I, too, like to see the scale move downward. I have two scales that I use. One, a fairly expensive balance scale (not a big, "Doctor's" scale, but...still, a balance scale. It weighs one pound lighter than the one at the clinic. Has for years. I bought it at Sears. They probably still sell one. The other, a Tanita, seems not as consistent, but is useful, if I follow the directions at weigh at the same time of day (shortly before lunch or supper). From it I can determine my total bodyfat. This figure is quite consistent with itself, even though the bf % will vary, and the weight will vary at this time of day. I only use the Tanita a couple of times a month, but with it I can see total pounds of fat dropping as I follow my program. My Sears scale, when I weigh upon rising in the morning, is also consistent for gross weight, and with it I can see the slow progress (week to week if not day to day) as my weight descends. Although we are the same height, and about the same weight, I keep my calories between 1650 and 2100, averaging about 1900 calories per day. I would like to eat a little less, and am working on it, but with 15 miles plus on the treadmill each week, and some weightlifting, the net calories after exercise is somewhere near 1400. My goal is to drop about a pound a week, but only 3 pounds a month. This has worked in the past, and is working now. Hope you find a way to weigh that works for you. I was a fat kid who (256 at my high at 5'8") lost 80lbs when I was 18 and stayed fairly normal until my early 40's when I quit smoking, and started to gain weight again. Although I should probably only concern myself with the the calories(1400 or so) ,with optimal nutrition, I find I need the motivation of seeing the scale move. I would like to know if anyone has a home scale they are really pleased with. Sugestions? Thanks, S.
