HOUSTON -- One of the many techniques being used in Congresswoman le

Giffords' recovery in Houston is what's called music therapy, a practice that's

helping her relearn to mouth words by having her sing.

But it's also helping the youngest of patients at another local hospital.

While has lived at Children's Memorial Hermann for over a year now,

he still has a smile for his music therapy sessions.

His mother, Marcela Trujillo, says after a week of music therapy her son could

sit up longer and and was more responsive.

Those reactions are huge milestones.

was born with Down Syndrome. He had holes in his heart and is missing

most of his esophagus. He hardly uses his hands because he's been hooked up,

poked and prodded for so long.

Music therapy, though, is helping to change that.

" He can reach like actually the toys, " said Trujillo.

Neugeubauer is one of only four music therapists in the Texas Medical

Center. Children's Memorial Hermann hospital started its program two years ago.

" It was really exciting for me to develop the program here and to still develop

it, " Neugeubauer said.

Twice a week, along with one-on-one sessions, the young patients get their music

medicine.

Recent medical studies show that music therapy helps children develop. In

babies, it helps them gain weight faster and gets them out of the hospital

sooner.

" Music stimulates cognitive skills, motor skills, speech language, " Neugeubauer

said.

Neugeubauer recently launched a study to further prove the benefits of music

therapy She hopes her findings will help the practice reach new and

unprecedented levels.

Interesting article BUT with confused info. " helping her relearn to mouth words

by having her sing. " This does not sound like traditional " music " therapy, but

instead MELODIC INTONATION therapy (MIT). MIT is a part of SPEECH therapy where

words are " sung " rather than spoken because a patient is more fluid when

" singing " .

The rest od the article appears to be about actual music therapy. 2 different

things.

Hi,

Just for clarification, Neurological Music Therapy (one model among many in

music therapy) utilizes Melodic Intonation as part of an intervention.
