Guest guest
Hi - Could you call the company and ask them why this batch smells so differently? Perhaps they can send you some new cannisters from a different " Batch " . It sounds like your daughter is noticing a taste difference in this Batch-- it would be worth a call to the company to ask why. I had an older unopened cannister of chocolate... I just opened it- and did not detect any form of an " herbal odor " . It makes me wondor is they changed something in the " mix " .... [ ] Question about strong flavored batch of NV Chocolate and an update My daughter Niamh will be 4 next month she was diagnosed just over a year ago by a developmental pediatrician with suspected verbal apraxia (and since then her neurologist has said she probably has global Apraxia too). She is on ProEFa 2 capsules daily, and has been on NV off and on since last summer. I say off and on as we have periods where she takes it fine, then she stops wanting to take it and refuses the food it is in. Initially she was on vanilla (the most we consistently got into her was 1/2 scoop per day), then she went off it so we tried chocolate which she didn't like at first but we gradually increased the amount she took. I thought we had finally cracked it a couple of months ago as we were consistently getting a scoop a day in - I hid a tablespoon of vanilla in her cereal then gave her a container with 2/3 scoop choc NV and a spoon and called it chocolate sprinkles - she would add it to her cereal and eat it up. In fact she liked it so much she was drinking the leftover milk from the bowl (she typically won't drink milk or milk substitutes at all ). I even got her to drink a glass of NV choc milk (made with a little traderjoes organic choc syrup) - which is huge as I've never got her to drink any kind of choc milk before. Then 3 weeks ago she and I went on a trip to Ireland and this coincided with opening a new can of Chocolate NV. The new can smells totally different - it has a strong herbally type smell the previous batch didn't. She missed 2 days as we were on planes and travelling, then the first 2 days at my mums she ate hardly any breakfast. Then she started saying no sprinkles and would totally refuse to eat it if there was any in it (and just putting a little vanilla in didn't work either.) We are home now and I'd really like to get her back on the NV - any ideas on how to overcome the strong herbally smell/ taste of this batch ? (I have 2 cans of it which is a couple of months supply so I don't want to order more). She was in EI ST from 18m to 3 years, and had been getting 3x a week 30 min individual ST through the school district since she turned 3. She attends a normal (private) preschool 3x a week. I started NV around the same time we transtioned to SD. We were never told what grade her Apraxia is, but her current SLP (who only started working with her last June after she was already on NV), said based on the notes and assessments done when she transitioned she thinks she was Moderate then. She has made a lot of progress in the last year - she is now quite a chatterbox, and although she still doesn't sound like a normal almost 4 yo people understand her much better than a year ago. She still has many sounds she can't make eg " K' - she can say Car spontanously but no other " k " words (she can say a few more in therapy), " F " she can say some words in therapy but none spontaneously, " G " - she just had a breakthrough and can now say gas, go, goose, ghost spontaneously (all words we have worked on), but no others, she also can'y say " S " , " R " , " L " , some " B " words she can say others she can't. She also has some strangeways of saying things, and does things like using " asking " to mean both asking and telling, mixes up names of mealtimes eg calling lunch breakfast etc etc Anyhow, everyone who knows her comments on what huge progress she has made in the last year. I had voiced some concerns earlier this year about her poor prewriting skiils and lack of handedness, and although she is still behind she did seem to be improving on the full scoop (and started to show a slight preference for her right hand) We have never seen dramatic changes in a a few days of being on NV - it has always been more like she just progresses faster on it. She did seem to be making even more progress on a full scoop a day (kept getting messages from her SLP saying what a great session she'd had). We have never seen regression when she is off the NV, but it does seem like her progress is slower off it. So I really want to work out how to get her back on NV - any hints on how to deal with the " herbally batches " . Also I wanted to get an OT assessment done in the next few weeks before her IEP - should I keep her off the NV until thats done ? (her IEP is in 4 weeks, her dev.ped follow up isn't until a month later). Thanks, mum to almost 4yo twins Niamh (Apraxia) and Aidan (previously globally delayed now pretty much caught up, sensory issues) and 7 yo (NT)
Guest guest
Hi ! When you say > She also has some strangeways of saying things, and does things like using " asking " to mean both asking and telling, mixes up names of mealtimes eg calling lunch breakfast etc etc Some of that could be what is in her motor memory as she's still learning speech- and some of it could be developmental. I wouldn't worry about it at this point. I know when I was little I used to call lettuce " salad " and no matter how many times people tried to correct me and tell me that lettuce went into a salad but lettuce it lettuce- I still called it salad. It made sense to me then. Do I still call lettuce salad -of course not -I was a little kid then! Also in a recent message to from our group here and at Facebook I just answered her with some information about 'stages of apraxia' as it can create developmental lags as well. (look at the last message from me here about this http://www.facebook.com/topic.php?uid=115029735601 & topic=15864 ) About the NV -I haven't heard this from anyone else and haven't noticed it myself and we go through 3 canisters of chocolate a week (!!) in my house alone because Tanner, me and my husband all use 2 scoops twice a day...well actually Tanner makes his own now and uses 3 scoops twice a day-so make that 3 1/2 canisters a week! And Tanner is the picky one here so if there was a difference he could detect even a bit he'd say " ewwwww this tastes disgusting I can't drink it " There was one time the texture was off and it was due to one of the herbs and it was bitter...it still worked and all of us had to use it and one of our parents in Saudi Arabia who orders a bunch at a time when family visits -I warned him it was nasty but we had no choice and he had to use it for 6 months -it was only one month it was like that - and our only option was not to use it at all and that wasn't going to happen. But no word from anyone else yet that I've heard and I typically do- anyone else here??? Did you call customer service yet? They are excellent- just call them at 866 349 9911, and even better for your situation as I've never heard this before and know she'd want to know the batch number -press option number 4 and ask for s in products. Because NV is all natural and there are fruits, roots and leaves that make up the botanicals there can be slight differences between batches -but the quality control is excellent and constantly tested so each has the same nutrient panel. I suspect it could be the on and off that could be an issue. You've been using NV since last summer so not quite a year? I have an unusual sense of smell and the different batches do smell a bit different to me -but they all work and that's all that matters -and again other than that one month's batch so far they all pretty much taste the same. Again with all natural botanicals it depends on that plant- the harvest etc. The progress you are seeing is incredible the fact that she's a " chatterbox " even if some of what she says is mixed up a bit. As far as more dramatic surges once you get the schedule regular at the right dosage of 2 scoops a day or even heaping scoops better yet - then you'll know more. Essential nutrients are needed daily. I added a new 'getting started' page and even though I know you aren't getting started -it may answer some of the questions and I do have the contact number for the manufacturer who ships for us! Also the second down has the serving suggestion and recipe page link -have you tried any of the recipes? (the various NV cookies are popular for the picky eaters) http://pursuitofresearch.org/getting-started/ =====
Guest guest
I haven't tried customer service yet - I just got back from Ireland a couple of days ago, I'll call them Monday. I have a tiny bit of the old batch left (just a scoop or so) and it just smells totally different - the old batch smells kind of warm and choclately, the new batch smells like a herbal tea. Both myself and my husband noticed it immediately on opening the can so it's not surprising my daughter noticed too. I did just try a little on my fingertip and it is more bitter. I wonder if it is from the batch that you noticed as more bitter a little while ago ? I bought it from speech411 rather than direct, so it could be that you still had some from that batch when I ordered it ? It was just such a pity as she was really enjoying her " sprinkles " and we were actually trying to make sure she didn't take too much as she was wanting it several times a day (and she still wants the same cereal just without the sprinkles). I did check and my other unopened can is the same batch 10326, so I'll see what customer service says. Do you think I should try to restart ASAP or wait until she has the OT assessment ? (I don't have a date yet but it is supposed to be in the next 3 1/2 weeks) Thanks, > > Hi ! > > When you say > > > She also has some strangeways of saying things, and does things like using " asking " to mean both asking and telling, mixes up names of mealtimes eg calling lunch breakfast etc etc > > Some of that could be what is in her motor memory as she's still learning speech- and some of it could be developmental. Guest guest
that depends because you say you started last summer and that's when we had that bitter batch around the month of July 2010. It was also a different lot number 10173 and I have more on that below. I also will put below one of the emails from Brittney -one of our parents here who I'm also friends with on facebook- because her daughter had incredible surges in 2 days on NV when she started on her on that one batch and we joked " imagine calling customer service and asking for more of the bitter batch! " At that time last summer it wasn't just the chocolate it was vanilla that was affected as well in the bitter taste because they both contain all the same ingredients except the chocolate has cayenne pepper and the vanilla has cinnamon. So it was one of the botanicals that are in both that was more bitter than usual- I can't recall which it was. But again didn't affect the quality of it -it still worked the same. These were the lot numbers -vanilla 10162 exp 6/2012 and chocolate 10173 exp. 6/2012. Again these were lots from around July of 2010. The lot you have is from February which is when you last ordered. If you call them you can get it switched as I have another batch too now -but I compared them in smell and they are slightly different but not much -again taste nobody here can tell the difference. I am the only one that can tell the difference in the smell with the different lots too. Then again my husband finds if freaky that I can tell where people buy me presents from sometimes because I know what different stores smell like -yes really my sense of smell is crazy sensitive(!!) But my husband and boys thankfully can't- well not so much my husband as that wouldn't matter but again for Tanner I'm glad his sense of smell isn't super strong in particular -he likes his chocolate NV one way now -with water and a splash of almond chocolate milk. When we started it was lots of chocolate syrup, agave, sometimes a half a stick of a fudgesicle or some chocolate ice cream with ice and we started with soy chocolate milk- and Tanner would drink it doctored up. I couldn't open up the comparison of the 1800s to today sundae but it's probably the exact opposite of Tanner with NV -he now likes his NV plain as possible -he will drink it with just water too. My other son Dakota is the only one in the family that prefers the vanilla -but he'll drink the chocolate if he has to -but finds it too " chocolaty " for him. Tanner on the other hand as he is old enough to explain to and also he himself knows when he is regressing at this point will drink the vanilla if he has to if we run out of chocolate (we get new product in all month long but sometimes not fast enough!!) -but in his words he thinks it " tastes disgusting -like vomit " (it doesn't to anyone else- my husband or I will drink it too-and again Dakota prefers it -but again my son Tanner with each sip of vanilla while holding his nose -the entire time he's drinking it you'll hear him complaining -and yes he's able to articulate exactly how much he hates it now!!! " Call them tomorrow and I know you will get the same message I just told you about the difference in the botanicals which is something out of anyone's control when you deal with natural products -but they are as particular as possible to try to keep it exactly the same. But I'll take a bit difference in the taste or smell -thankfully not the formula!! Here's an update as promised about that bitter batch from last summer! Sat Jul 17, 2010 11:48 am Re: Not even 2 days on NV!! Well this is really good news but very funny too!! There's never anything different about the formula for nutriiveda -but keep in mind they deal with slow growing vegetations (see the list here http://pursuitofresearch.org/ingredients.html )and depending upon when they are harvested etc. there can be actual changes in how the product tastes, blends etc. I mean for the most part it's the same and it always works. Well Brittany got this one lot that out of the entire time we've used nutriiveda is the most bitter tasting -so right after she got it she posted this to my facebook wall " We got our NV last night...dosed out 1/2 a scoop and gave it to Cale before bed. Realized this morning that we are out of juice (which I mixed it into last night) and just dumped it into whatever was in his sippy cup from dinner last night (not sure what it was). He told me it was " P. U. " LOL I got him to drink it anyw...ay...guess I need to get more juice :-) I'll let you know how he does!! " And I joked to Brittany won't it be funny if this batch that we don't like as much ends up being even more effective?! And sure enough that is how it seems! Not that most of you would know because everyone expects nutriiveda to not taste good anyway since so many say they have trouble getting it into their kids which is why I came up with this full page!!! http://pursuitofresearch.org/serving_suggestions.html Anyway -Brittany and I were talking and she said " Can you imagine me calling the company and asking for the more bitter tasting nutriiveda?!! " So that is why this update is both incredible and funny at the same time. Yay for Brittany and Yay for nutriiveda and Yay for bitter slow growing vegetation!!!! haha Brittany can we share your update on our testimony page (taking off email etc of course) here http://pursuitofresearch.org/testimonials.html Congratulations!!! =====

Guest guest
Hi , As you hadn't noticed any taste difference with this batch I figured I'd try her again with it before calling customer service. On Sunday I gave her cereal with a tablespoon of vanilla NV plus used the choc NV I had from the previous canister as sprinkles and she ate it up. Monday I gave her cereal with a tablespoon vanilla NV - then just gave her a couple of teaspoons of the " herbally " choc NV, as sprinkles and she ate it, so I've been gradually increasing the amount of the choc NV each day. Today I gave it both with her cereal in the morning and in chocolate puddig this afternoon and she has eaten it all - and is back up to a full scoop (she is still 3 so I had been considering that her full dose), I will try increasing her to a heaping scoop over the next few days. This batch still smells really weird to me but the important thing is she is eating it again, so I guess it was being away from home that was putting her off before not the smell/ taste. Thinking back the times she has stopped taking it before have been when we are away from home or when she has been sick (plus when I was recovering from surgery and her dad didn't give it to her when he was in charge of breakfast for a few weeks !) Anyhow I'm happy she is taking it again, > > > > that depends because you say you started last summer and that's when we had that bitter batch around the month of July 2010.
