Guest guest
Hi can anyone PLEASE give me some easy hints on regrouping and carrying 3 and 4 digit numbers. My daughter doesnt know when to regroup.. for example: 782 -356 She wants to subtract the 6 - 2 to get 4 instead of taking a 1 from the 8 to make the new number (12) and if she does remember to do this she forgets to make the 8 a 7 so she will subtract 8-5 to get 3 instead (7-5 to get 2). very FRUSTRATING night for us so if anyone has any suggestions for Apraxic child to understand the rules of regrouping and carrying (adding), please help me before tomorrow night! also carrying while adding (ie) 782 she will add the 2+6 right, but then when she +356 wants to add the 8+5 to get 12 she'll put the 2 and NOT carry the 1.. I want to somehow make the rules of regrouping and adding more simplified for her but I dont know how. I was always very good at math but couldn't teach it to save my soul... very bad night I left frustrated and upset and my husband had to take over, she was then mad and he tried to stay calm and was good for the most part but he NEVER really got math eiter(hmmm!) so he tried but just ended up doing most of it for her... PLEASE HELP! Thank you... TLC

Guest guest
I understand your frustration. I have a daughter who is now 11 with nonverbal disorder and auditory processing disorder (APD) and with elementary school homework in our household there was a lot of frustation and yelling because I didn't understand her particular disorder at the time and didn't know how to teach her. Two things you can try. First, what helps my daughter is to break it down step by step. Too much verbage overwhelms her because of her APD. I set up step by step processes with my daughter as well as give her certain rules that are always applied and that helps her. Make it clear you are subtracting and that you always subtract the top number from the bottom. Box the top numbers one by one to show that is who you are taking from. Also, try this: get marbles, beads, pennies to count with and visually subtract the single digits. Hands on and visuals may help her. Ask her " Can you take six marbles from 2? No, so I will need to borrow from my next door neighbor but he can only give me 10 at a time. " Does she understand place values? - because if she understands the logic that will help. Have 8 beads equaling 10 each - a different color preferably so she distinguishes between 10s and 1s. Secondly, I read this trick on a support website the other day for APD and haven't had the chance to try it but the mom swore by it. Do one problem with her and explain it slowly. Then tell her to watch you carefully and do 4-8 more problems doing the exact same steps and rules but don't say anything. No words are said, just have her watch you. As you do this, make sure you touch each number and subtraction sign with the pencil so she can follow along. I hope this helps or at least some of it. Good luck!! > > Hi can anyone PLEASE give me some easy hints on regrouping and carrying 3 and 4 digit numbers. Guest guest
Not sure if this helps at all or not, but Im 16 and have Apraxia. I remember learning about this in 3rd grade, and one thing my teacher taught the class was the three B's. The B's stood for Bottom, Bigger, Borrow. I thought that the three B rule made it easier and I still remember it and even use it today. > > Hi can anyone PLEASE give me some easy hints on regrouping and carrying 3 and 4 digit numbers. Guest guest
We got an abicus for my 12yo son when he was about that age. They're great to have around when trying to get them to visualize math concepts! > > > > Hi can anyone PLEASE give me some easy hints on regrouping and carrying 3 and 4 digit numbers. Guest guest
Hi, TLC! Sorry for the late response. I've been out of town. Thanks for posting about your daughter. I've learned some tricks myself from the other postings. I completely forgot about the abacus!!! What a great visual. I hope the suggestions from everyone have helped.
