Guest guest
Well, just putting in my 2 cents' observations, but this summer camp thing for most of us parents doesn't sound like a very good thing.......it's supposed to relieve all of you from stress, but instead, causes more, what with the worry about how they're behaving, etc......is it worth it?? I know I could never send at his age because emotionally, I just don't think he would be ready....maybe in a few years.....I'm not saying anyone made a mistake by sending their kids to camp, but do you all think that maybe, just maybe, your kids are just too young to really impact them positively?? I would reconsider sending when he is in more control of himself and not so much in the " toddler stage " that he's in now......lol.....that means I wouldn't send him to camp until he's 15!! I just don't know......maybe it's best if we wait a few more years.........

I asked my family and friends before sending him. Most said " He needs to get away and do something on his own, it will be good for him " . And in the long run, they were right and he had ended up having a great week. The counselor sent home a book of pictures with Gene doing crafts, hiking and they even got him to ride a horse!! That is a miracle to me. His personality totally mellowed over the week and I am finding him less angry and much calmer today than I have seen in a few year. His counselors loved him and he had his special ones. I am thankful he had a good experience and I know some others didn't ...but I guess we would never have known unless we tried. We plan to move there after school is finished.....probably mid-June. You can e-mail me privately if you want. Kankakee has a fantastic camp that Gareth has gone to every summer since we moved here. I have gotten quite spoiled by it!!! I hope he finds a good one this summer in State College.......he really enjoys going off to camp. I have never had him go overnight, though. He's scared to death of darkness and rain storms. Best keep him home at night!!! Take care, Everyone. Margaret > >

Guest guest
I live in Minnesota and would love to find one as well. WE attended a very good camp in Hudson Wisconsin that dealt with Sensory Integration therapy. Some kids were on the spectrum but that was not the focus. lj Re: Summer Camps I don't see any responses on this one so I'm bumping it up - Anyone in Nevada know?? -Lana On 2/24/08, whales_strawberry <whales_strawberry > wrote: With the end of the school year fast approaching, we want to send our 8 year old son to Summer Day Camp. Guest guest
I have given up on summer camps all together, it would be great to hear from other parents on summer camps. I know there are camps out there for kids with special needs, but what about the AS kids who still have meltdowns? My 12 yr. old has meltdowns that keep him from getting into a lot of summer programs, including special needs programs. I think a lot of his meltdowns in a group setting are caused by his sensory issues. I would also like to hear what other families will be doing for the summer. Thanks, Dawn
Guest guest
There are summer camps designed specifically for AS kids in most states, where the staff is trained to manage those situations ... Check with your Community Parent Resource Centers or your Parent Information Centers (PTIS & CPRC's).. or contact the Alliance @ 888-248-0822... for resources available to you in your State. Guest guest
Our county program here in land offers free Inclusion Specialists for kids with special needs in summer camps. You might want to Google your county with " inclusion specialist/s " to see what similar programs are offered near you. Jaelynne
Guest guest
Do you mean Bergen County in New Jersey? My son has been to mainstream summer camps but this year we're looking at special needs camps.... I just feel like he's wasting valuable time during the summer by going to mainstream camps where he's bullied and not learning friend-making skills - which the special needs camps do ... We are considering a day camp for special needs through the JCC in Staten Island. http://www.sijcc.org/specialneeds_weissglass.htm Many JCH's and JCC's offer camps at reasonable prices -- and scholarships, as well. Y camps occasionally offer special needs divisions too -- and have scholarships. There are also many sleep away camps ... Resources for Children with SPecial Needs hosted a camp fair last month with many camps in attendance and they gave out a book with over 500 camps listed. You can check their database here ; http://www.resourcesnycdatabase.org/resources I'm considering a week or two of sleepaway for my son .. It'd be his first time. There are a couple of camps that do an integrated mainstream/special needs program... both Y camps. Camp Eljabar-Speers and Frost Valley Y through YAI - called mainstreaming at camp. As my son is coping in a mainstream 3rd grade class in school, I thought these would be great options for him. Many of the 100% special needs sleep aways are very expensive because they have so much staff .. but they seem worth it to me... Summit Camp (http://www.summitcamp.com) looked like a really good one, to me. Good luck, > > Hello! My son just turned 15 and needs to attend camp this summer, > preferably in Bergen county. Guest guest
Hi Pam, In researching potential residential schools for teenagers with as, I discovered Bachman Academy. While it is a residential school , it also offers summer camp opportunities. It is located a little north of Chattanooga, Tn. This is a youtube video interview that introduces Bachman. http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-7272766094156352013#docid=-564036251888\ 4011353 Or do a search for Bachman Academy on youtube.com I have no connection to the school and only learned about it by a chance encouter with their recently retired headmaster who was very charismatic and sincere. I don't know what the summer programs cost but tuition is around $45K /year...no scholarships are available which is why our aspie cannot attend. > > > Does anyone know of any really good summer camps for kids with > Asperger's?
