Subject: [ ] Planning online support group for teens and young

adults

Hi everyone!

As my son Tanner is now 14 and we have many members who have children that are

teens and young adults I am thinking about starting a support group for those

that grew up with apraxia and other speech impairments.

What triggered this for me was a post on our group's facebook page

http://www.apraxia.org from an 18 year old.

On our Facebook page she wrote

" Hey im Britney and i have apraxia for my whole life.. im 18 now and i was

wondering is there anything to help my speech. "

We have emailed back and forth and I have connected her with Barbara and

SLP from this group because she wrote to me that

" I want to get my speech better because everyone made fun of me and i dont like

it. "

I know Tanner would be up to be part of the group and have already spoken to

Brit about it. We can make it open to parents as well but it can be more of a

group where the teens and young adults can share what has worked for them,

support each other. Each has had therapy =some good and some not so good. So

getting methods out there will be a blessing.

We need to do this as well because the horrible name childhood apraxia of speech

has made it difficult for those that grew up with apraxia and are still affected

to feel welcome in support groups. We want to embrace all...not just those with

children up to ____ years old!!!

Please let me know if you are interested in being part of this. Email me at

lisa@... or answer here if it's something we all should hear. Also please

share any suggestions, questions etc.

Thanks!
